THE WOODLAND TELEGRAPH Are there people today familiar with the Woodland Telegraph? This system was a way of sending messages was invented by the early Indians. They had an uncanny ability to circulate news quickly throughout the wilderness surrounding the small settlement known as Isbester's Landing; later known as Schreiber ,a small divional point for the CPR being pushed along the Northshore of Lake Superior. This was the first telegraph system on the American Continent. Messages were sent by smoke signals from high mountains or by fleet and silent footed runners long before the white men came or invaded these shores.Special calls rang throughout the forests. The Indians relayed these calls to other Indians at other locations. The runners ran at a steady and silent pace from one location to another. It was an amazing system of speeding information. It was a capable and efficient way of communication and proved a GodSend to the contractors building the railroad in the Schreiber area.
