WHITE RIVER,ONTARIO White River,a CPR terminal about fifty miles east of Schreiber,Ontario, celebrated it's IOOth birthday in the year of 1985 in the month of Juluy. This railway town is known as the coldest spot in Canada but it can also be warm at heart. Visitors and tourists are shown generous hospitality at any season of the year, even when the temperature drops to 72 degrees Farenheit below zero. This community began in the early 1880's when the railroad came through till 1885 when it was declared a town and a CPR divisional point. The steam locomot-ives were serviced with water and coal. The railroad had stockyards near the shops where shipments of livestock for Eastern markets were let loose to feed and water and exercise while the CPR employees cleaned the stock cars before reloading the livestock tocontinue their journey to the slaughtering houses and meat packing businesses. A new Flood Central System was installed in 1979 following a spring flood of that year. Old timers and former residents came from the Yukon,Br. Columbia, the prairie provinces,Eastern Ontario,Quebec and the USA to join in the Anniversary Celebrations. There was much joy clasping hands and tears when old friends met.
