Schreiber Council Holds 1972 Inaugural Meeting Mutual congratulations and good wishes were exchanged by Reeve F. V. Harness and his councillors at the inauguaral meeting of Schreiber's municipal council. Reeve Harness, in his address, stated the past year had been most successful in carrying out projects and in ending in "the right color" on the books. He was pleased that the councillors who had worked on so many of the improvements will be in office when they are completed this year--sewer installation, highway lighting and the building of the new post office and bank. Although council was not directly involved in the two new buildings, they did urge that they be built in the centre of the town to best serve the citisens. It has been suggested that elections for council be held every two years instead of annually. The present ambulance service is not as satisfactory as desired and a meeting was held with the drivers, who had several suggestions to offer regarding improvements, which are worth considering. Councillor H. J. McParland commented: "We should meet with the road engineer from Dept. of Transportation and Communications early in spring to discuss projetcs such as grading Brunswick and Scotia St. at Superior, and plan a paving program following the completion of the sewer work. He might also advise on the condition of the dam at Cook's Lake." Mr. McParland also felt that If the present tax sale procedure was changed to tax registration it might do away with delays caused by the solicitor and registry office. Property owners would be protected by this new method and might have an added benefit. He also felt the post office lobby should be open on 24-hour basis. Councillor R. B. Spadoni, beginning his seventh year on council, also was pleased with the various long-awaited improvements in town, mentioning sewers, new post office, bank, township garage and the liquor outlet. He felt the proposed new trailer court will be a stimulant, and the town should cooperate and possibly promote the setting aside of a street in the north end where lots can be purchased for the accommodation of new citizens wishing live in trailers. Mr. Spadoni also felt the planned pavement program should be carried out with professional help and suggested the present downtown sewers be retained as storm sewers in the event of excessive water or flood conditions. Council should promote an independent developer for a laundromat, try to secure new quarters for the public library, and a centre for senior citizens. Re-building the road from Schreiber to the Lake Superior beach, just east of the town Mr. Spadoni felt would be an additional attraction for tourists, since so many inquire how to reach the lake which seems so near Schreiber. Referring to the recreation committee, he suggested a co-ordinating secretary to make the budget extend farther, and the possibility of a tennis court under the present winter works program. He strongly believes in the Northwestern Ontario Development Council and if council remains in it will give it close interest. Councillor H. H. Fischer said when considering sidewalk improvements, a looping of several watermains should be given priority. He expressed appreciation to the town crew Cor their services. Schreiber's fire department, he said, is one of the best in Northwestern Ontario, with their new fire truck, and good second standby vehicle. "We should continue to co-operate with the brigade and see that the fire chief attends the fire school in the Spring," said Mr. Fischer. He agreed with investigation of property titles and check of the dam at Cook's Lake. Councillor J. S. Caccamo was in favor of most of the proposed work, saying it seemed obvious that last year's good season in the town's interest had been largely achieved by frank speaking and serious consideration of suggestions by various members, with of j course harmonious relations in working with each other, Reeve Harness stated the assistant district municipal engineer and road engineer will be in Schreiber on a road inspection and council will then have an opportunity to discuss several problems with them. | MPP Jack Stokes has urged: mail delivery at residences for Northwestern Ontario. He also mentioned the greatly improved operation of snow machines within the town. Standing committees were named as follows: Finance--F. V. Harness, R. B. Spadoni; property-- H, H. Fischer, J. S. Word was received that the Terrace Bay appeal, regarding the equalization report for apportionment 1971 costs for the District Home for the Aged had been granted by the Ontario Municipal Board. In response to a request, Schreiber council agreed to co-sponsor a luncheon with Manitouwadge, Marathon and Terrace Bay at the Thunder Bay Municipal League convention April 7-8. John Scott of the Northern Affairs office, will visit Schreiber the first and third Tuesday of each month. Mr Scott is most concerned with people, offering information on what they want to do, where to go, with whom to speak--all matters of government concern. Mr. Scott will diagnose problems and communicate these to the government office not locally available or, refer them to the proper government service. Inquiries may directed through Michael Redd, public health inspector In Schreiber, or, through the municipal clerk in Terrace Bay. After studying information literature it was decided to purchase a standby chlorinator and pump for the town water supply. Water works bill amounting to $616.97 and general accounts of $2,634.39 were passed for payment. Reeve Harness and town clerk Mrs. M. Zombori were empowered to select and buy the most suitable insurance coverage for the reeve and councillors. Proposed changes in traffic signs are a crosswalk at Columbia and Winnipeg (at Costa's Store); no left turn at the end of Drummond St where it intersects with Main St. and Walker Lake Road; and a stop, except on right turn, on Winnipeg and Scotia. The lowest tender, submitted by Gulf Canada, for supply of township oil and fuel, was accepted. Thunder Bay will be asked to give Schreiber a copy of its bylaw prohibiting dumping of snow on public thoroughfares.
