Early Fire Equipment Recalled BY INEZ McCUAIG Few facilities in Schreiber better demonstrate its independent spirit than its fire fighting brigade, which is still a voluntary company. The front street has been swept by three disastrous fires and the first organized attempt at fire fighting was done by the CPR shop workers who devised a hose on wheels. About 1931 reeve J. E. Shee-han appealed for a voluntary brigade with response coming from Cyril Sparkes, Hugh Stew art, Floyd Caldwell, Lester Mc Cuaig, Hubert Weaver, Albert Gauthier, Don Rosie, Bill Hawker and Charlie Firman -- the latter three now of Fort Wil liam. Under Floyd Caldwell's dir~ ection an old Ford Sedan was transformed into the town's first fire truck and well - served its purpose, along with the hose reel. This new equipment and its efficiency soon drastically reduced fire insurance rates in the town. Schreiber now has a modern truck and equipment which is continually being added to. The men hold regular practices and study sessions with lectures coming and representatives being sent away for instruction. But it remains a volunteer brigade, a citizen's contribu-tion to community welfare and safety. Pat Bolan is the present chief. Each Hallowe'en the brigade holds a masquerade ball which is one of the biggest social events of the year. All money realized from the event is used to purchase fire fighting equipment.
