Russell Branch of The Canadian Cancer Society will hold its 3rd ~gu,,. annual Fashion Show on Monday, March 29th, to launch the campaign for funds. Fashions will be courtesy of Latremouille Ltd. of Embrun who continue to support the work of the Cancer Society. Local models will again elicit whistles of approval as they parade before another an- ticipated full house at the Russell Arena. Admission is .... $1 for children and $2 for adults. The objective for the campaign is $3,250, and there is no doubt in the minds of the Russell Branch that this target will be reached. Mrs. Diny Achtereekte who is again heading the campaign committee said, "The citizens of Russell have been most generous in past campaigns, con- tributing to the fight against cancer." Approximately 30 campaign volunteers will be knocking on doors throughout the month of April. Whew! Russell township is reeling from a 300-per-cent hike in the cost of licensing its five township vehicles. "It's no wonder municipalities have problems setting their budgets,"' said Reeve Gaston Patenaude. Until this year Ontario municipalities have been allowed to renew motor vehicle licences for $2 each. But the ministry of transportation changed all that this year, leaving Russell with a bill of $3,055 for its five vehicles -- $838 each for its three heavy tandem trucks; $481 for one lighter truck and $60 for an eight cylinder pick-up truck. = Why do we ask cows esoteric questions like: "When do you think Spr- ing will come?" I dunno. But someone once said that when it comes to grass, fences, clover, hay and weather you can always find a cow outstanding in it's field. Anybody know what that means? Hamburgers? Sure In the "it's about time" category, Russell area residents can now buy fresh, locally grown lamb as Tyo's Red and White tests the market for the product. In the past, most local lamb eaters had to settle for frozen New Zealand meat unless they bought direct from one of many local sheep farmers. Pointing out the local lamb he'll be selling is locally- slaughtered and government inspected, Jack Tyo said sales are already better than expected. The price is right with lamburger-selling for $1.39 a pound and the top cut -- loin roast -- going for $3.89. Freezer owners can buy an entire 50-pound lamb cut to order and wrapped for about $100, Jack said. Council resists raises Russell Township councillors recently decided to help the financially strapped township by freezing their own 1982 salaries at the 1981 rate. Currently, Reeve Gaston Patenaude earns a basic salary of $6,308 plus $4,900 for public representation -- working on council businesses at the township offices; Deputy Reeve Albert Bourdeau earns $4,950 plus $1,200 for public representation; and the three councillors earn $4,455, plus $1,000 for public representation. Ticket complications An ignored December parking ticket served by the Township crime- busters brought about the following scenario: the ticket was originally hung in Russell, was payable in Embrun, the summons was issued at Rockland, was served' by an OPP officer from Casselman, and was payable out of court in L'Original.
