We decided on an Irish Setter and a Golden Retriever, who joined us at nine weeks, and seven weeks of age respectively. In order to learn how best to handle them, I joined The Ottawa Kennel Club, The Ottawa Valley All Setter Association, and The Ottawa Valley Gun Dog Club. I Dogs as friends -- By Colleen Petry How did the association bet- ween humans and dogs begin? Dogs are treasured companions all - over'the world as we know, but who was the first dog owner? Just as researchers hope to find the missing link that will prove (or disprove) Darwin's' Theory of Evolution, students of dogdom search for evidence of the origin of our canine friends. Until proof is found, we can only guess. also participated in an intensive course for dog breeders, covering behaviour, breeding, anatomy, genetics etc. Although I have yet to apply much of this information to a breeding program of my own, I have a strong interest and a weakness for talking about dogs to anyone who will listen. I hope all Castor area dog owners will find my columns en- joyable and useful. when did it start? We do know that-as far back as man can be traced, dogs have been our companions. One theory of evolution applied to dogs suggests that they descended from wolves. This theory supposes that a mutually beneficial relationship developed after wolves were at- tracted to man's surroundings by discarded bones and remnants of meals. Their warning howl would alert "cave man" to the approach of RON VEH strangers, so he began to ap- preciate the animals' visits, and encourage them to return. As the trust between the two developed, wolf mothers led their young into the area of the humans. , It's not difficult to picture human and wolf youngsters play- ing together. This would naturally lead to a strengthening of the growing friendship. Today's dog behaviorists tell us that the bond between our domestic dogs and humans must be forged within the first twelve weeks of the puppy's life or he will never fully trust people and will behave more like a wild animal, shy and unresponsive to training. Fortunately, this rarely happens as puppies are so §ir- resistable at that age. This is not to suggest that the change from wolf to dog occurred in one generation, but through years of association with man some of the animals adapted through heredity and environment to a stage where they preferred human company to that of their own family, or pack. Through these years man also developed uses, and no doubt, af- fection for his four-footed friends, began feeding them regularly and including them as part of the family.
