They soaped and scrubbed -- and it didn't rain all day. Isobel's garden Don't burn those leaves. Why waste all the good nutrients in leaves by burning them? Much better to put them back into. the soil. It's hard work but well worth it, and much cheaper than buying artificial fer- tilizers. ~Here's how: Your garden is probably already dug up now and clean of vegetable stalks and roots. Dig a trench the length or width (if you _prefer) of your garden plot. Make it about eight or nine in- ches deep. Pack the leaves into it and cover it with the earth from the next trench. Continue digging rows of trenches, about a foot apart, until the whole plot is done. Remember, don't smooth out the earth. When a farmer works: his fields he leaves it rough so the frost can work its way into the soil. In the spring the leaves you put into the ground will have decom- posed and enriched your garden soil the natural way! Don't Mulch too Soon Most people make the mistake of covering their flowerbeds with leaves too soon. If it's done before the first good frost, the mulch will trap moisture in the bed and the bulbs and roots may, start to rot,if , there is a lot of rain, (As there cer- tainly. was, 'this 'year!).*.°.4.4.'
