6 The Castor Review, September, 1981 Russell swims to second The: Russell swimming Beavers topped off a successful season on Aug. 25 with a second place finish in the Eastern Ontario Regional Championships in Ottawa. The 50-swimmer strong Beaver club won the Regional event last year but were nipped by Hawkesbury this summer. _ "We did very well in the Regionals", says Coach~Lindley Stachon, "at one point we were standing twelfth, but pulled all the way up to second."' A total of 17 teams competed. The Beavers finished in the top three at all eight meets this sum- mer -- while winning three com- petitions. The major event was held Aug. 29 when a dance and giant corn roast took place at the Dr. Kin- naird Community Centre. A bot- tle drive is set for Sept. 12, a car wash Sept. 19 at the arena (99 cents) a skate-a-thon in early November and a beef draw Nov. 17. A cash bingo is scheduled for Oct. 13. Forms for the skate-a- thon can be picked up when you register in minor hockey Sept. 4 (7-9 p.m.) and Sept. 5 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. Registration will cost first year Novice players $35 while second year Novice will be charged $50. Players in the Atom to Midget range will pay $65 and Juveniles will pay $75. Juveniles will receive a $20 refund if they participate in the Huron program. Books of Beef Draw tickets will 'also be available at registration. LOCAL PLAYERS DRAFTED Windsor Spitfires of the Ontario Hockey League selected Russell's Todd McLaren during the Junior A draft in June. McLaren played for the Ottawa Senators of the Central Junior Hockey League last- season while still a midget age player. Before he joined the Senators, he was a member of the Gloucester Rangers "AA" minor hockey-teams. McLaren reports to Windsor be a long association with the competition, he registered in Sept. 2 for what he hopes will team. In the CJHL draft held also in June, Tim Cavan of Metcalfe and Tim Oshier of Greely were selected by the Brockville Braves. His minor hockey was played with the Gloucester Rangers and East Ottawa Voyageurs "AA" teams. Golf open all set to tee off When the athletic awards were handed out at North Dundas District High School, Russell area students came home with a large share of the silverware. Top senior girl went to Debbie McVey while Phil Oliver walked off with the Junior boys award. The young track sensation represented the school at the All- Ontario meet held in Thunder Bay. The top senior award was shared by Todd McLaren and Jack Ledger. John Corvinelli was Most Valuable Player in senior boys basketball and Jack Ledger in junior boys basketball. Athlete of the Week awards went to Jamie Hicks for curling and John Corvinelli for basketball on three separate occasions; dou- ble winners were Phil Oliver, Jack Ledger and Todd McLaren. (Dennis McGann Athletes awarded On Sunday, Sept. 13, a total of 100 golfers will tee off at the Met- calfe Golf and Country Club in what is being billed as the biggest and best in the Russell Open Golf Tournament's short history. Entry fee is $20 per player and the first 100 paid entries, only, will be accepted. The cost to enter in- cludes green fees, meal, refreshments, trophies to winners, many excellent prizes and, of course, much fun for all. Tee-off times are from 7 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Organizers still have some Openings remaining but sug- gest anyone interested should get their entries in as soon as possible. Forms are available at Tyo's Red and White in Russell. ' i Juniors are still winning The Russell Junior fastball team hasn't tasted defeat, after 15 | starts, in the South Carleton | Fastball League. Final standings show the team won 13 games. and tied two. They beat Carlsbad three games to nothing in the semi- finals and now meet Gloucester South in the finals. Russell also competed in two in- termediate tournaments, winning one and faring well in the other. They won the Embrun tourna- ment and top prize of $800. Pit- cher Greg McLaren received best hitter and top pitcher trophies from Carling O'Keefe while winn- ing all four games he threw. In their opening game in the Moose Creek Tournament, Russell dumped Berwick 5-1. In their next outing, Russell's Greg McLaren and Morrisburg's Paul McIntosh dueled for nine scoreless innings before Mor- risburg squeezed a run home in the 10th inning for a 1-0 victory. Earlier, Russell had a man on third with one out but didn't get the clutch hit they desperately needed. Despite the loss, coach Jack McLaren was pleased with their performance in the tournament and the entire season.
