Page 10 a Castor Earl Here | is! Spring has sprung, the grass has ris' I bet you're wonderin' where ol' Earl is. Here I is, right up here. See the ol' mug lookin' out at ya. That's me, alrightee. Lord knows I tried to keep writin' durin' the winter but it was awful dang hard. There was just nothin' [ could do. I was like a big ol' bear that just curled up and went to sleep for the cold spell. But just as sure as the little blue S.H.1I.T. house will be back with the ice on the Castor, I come to life with the first breath of spring. And ain't she breathin', though. It's enough to make a body leap for Joy -- or any other little lady who strays too close. The sun is firin' up and warmin' the beejabbers out of the earth so that the green grass has just got to poke up along with all the early flowers like your crocusses. I just love those little cusses. The Castor is a silver thread -- well, maybe she ain't quite silver -- pullin' Metcalfe, Russell, and Embrun together in one big happy package. Speakin' of your Castor and your S.H.I.T. house, weren't that one dang of an idea them fund raisers had. Lordy! That would have kept us goin' all winter if the dang river hadn't gone and broke up so quick. My only complaint is that the blue house wasn't equipped for service and there was one night on my way back from the hotel when I sure could of used 'er. I had to rush back to home likety-split and use my Own privy. The next thing that gang is doin' is holdin' a Lil' Abner and Daisy Mae look-alike contest next month. I ain't goin' to enter it because it would be no contest -- unless I go into the Daisy Mae part. Watch out world. Ol' Earl is reborn. HORSE BITS With Lola Wood Since spring is the traditional time to go horse-hunting, I have devoted several columns to facts needed to indulge in this wonderful quest. In the past, there have been many articles on health and soundness. These, of course, are of prime importance. "No Foot, no Horse" is a saying that can't be ignored. (Except by yours truly; who has an ir- replaceable horse-friend who has lousy feet). Below are the basic horse colors so that you can at least appear knowledgeable. Black: rarer than you think because many can be bays or browns. Bay: any shade of brown with black points (ie. mane, tail, and lower limbs) Brown: dark brown or nearly black with brown points. Chestnut: shades of brown with similar mane and tail (light, dark, liver) Grey: white and black hairs intermixed. "Iron grey'? -- black hairs predominate. "light grey" -- more white hairs. "flea bitten grey'? -- dark hairs occur in tufts. Dun, Buckskin grulla--vary from mouse color to 'cand with black points or zebra markings on legs. Buckskin may have a dorsel strip- black line down back. Roan: strawberry, bay or blue are some variations -- mixture of white hairs with chestnut, bay or black. Palomino: color of newly minted penny -- only allowed markings on lower limbs. Pinto or Paint (overo- or tobiano) large irregular patches of color and white. Piebald: black and white. Skewbald: any other color except black with white. Appaloosa: spotted in many variations (ie. blanket, leopard, snowflake). It must have striped hooves, mottled muzzle, and white sclera around eye. Albino: has no pigmentation in true form.
