Jack Mclaren Ramblings A's Default I must admit some disappointment when I learned that the Russell 'A's fastball team was forced to default the semi-final against Blossom Park a couple of weeks ago due to an insufficient number of players on one particular evening. This was, in my view, the only possible way that any opposing South-Carletn team was going to advance against them. Defaulting any game, let alone a play-off game is bad business and it is obvious that if the A's are going to regain their winning ways, more dedication and effort will have to return to their game. There were too many mental errors committed this past season, for one reason or another. A couple of Review issues ago I suggested that perhaps the time was ripe for the A's to move up to Intermediate level. What just happened recently tends to support my statement. While the South-Carleton league now provides a better opportunity for local area players instead of imports, it is obvious to me that the A's team is getting stale -- they are a much better team than they showed. A good touch Intermediate league should change all that. Some of the: players have expressed dissatisfaction with this year' operation -- unless changes are made they won't be back and then you will end up with a house league team. CFL Boredom For the most part I try to stick to local sports' topics in this column. Professional activities get more than adequate coverage in newspapers, magazines, T.V. etc. But I can't help commenting on the lousy product} the CFL is trying to ram down our throats this current season. Even the T.V. game commentators are getting embarrassed. I just finished wat- ching Ottawa play Hamilton (commercials were the most exciting part) and one would think that both teams were the most exciting part) andi one would think that both teams were scrimmaging for the first time this| season. George Brancato got more yardage walking to the ice bucket than the entire Ottawa backfield did all afternoon. While the Constitu- tion is all our government has on its mind these days and I as a patriotic Canadian would dearly like to watch good old CFL football, I couldn't help but turning the dial and having a peak at an NFL game (actually I do this quite often). The sports scene is jumping with Green, Red, Black and Gold teams vying for supremacy. In girls soccer, Red came out on top. In boys football, Red defeated Gold 26-8, Black buried Green 50-14. Gold nipped Red 11-8 in girls basektball. In the annual Athletic Associa- tion Runathon, Red out-distanced Green 67-53. Gold came third with 47; Black fourth with 41. Top male runner was Pat Hornsby who chugged 38 laps in an hour for a new school record. Top female runners at 30 laps each were Patricia Rance, Andrea Beeching, Bernadette Wouters and Debbie Hornsby. In interscholastic sports, both the senior and junior basketball Marvelville Ringette The Marvelville Ladies Ringette team is already getting prepared to defend their championship of the Gloucester Ladies Ringette League. The league has brought in a new rule which prohibits anyone under the age of 25 from participating in league play. Each team will play 16 games this season with the Marvelville opener scheduled for 21 Oct. The league has been divid- ed into two divisions, A and B with Marvelville participating in the A Division against Blackburn, Beacon Hill and Orleans. The Casselman team has decid- ed to drop out of the competition for this season. The Marvelville team will be playing at the Dr. F. Minor hockey opens The Kinnaird Arena is echoing once more to the sound of crashing - sticks and whistling blades as minor hockey gets into full swing. Some 120 boys and girls are registered. The Huron Hockey program is being well received by both players and coaches and should aid in developing good players. Finances are always a problem. Fund-raising projects included a cash Bingo on October 9 at the Catholic Church, for which the executive are sincerely grateful. Planned for this winter is a One Hundred and Fifty Club draw.
