""Kiss I can think of few things which have given me more concern in this changing and _ generally deteriorating world of ours than a recent report prepared by a group known as Women Against Sexual Harassment. Beyond the initial shock of realizing that there existed such an organization was the shock of the report itself. Based on interviews with twenty-five women in Win- nipeg the report states that a ma- jority of these ladies reported that they had been subjected to sexual harassment in the business world. I cannot, in a respectable family paper quote the exact details of the types of harassment that these ladies suffered. I can say in general terms, it consisted of pin- ches, pats, suggestive remarks, leers and "propositions related to job security."' There are a number of matters here to produce a raising of the eyebrows. In the first place, I find myself wondering about those ladies--the minority, of course--who did not report any sexual harassment by their bosses or co-workers. No pinches, pats, suggestions, propositions. Not even any leers? What sort of an office were these ladies working in? It is a strange office where the boss or even a male co-worker cannot work up a leer or two. xy eZ Me or You're Fired I cannot help but be intrigued at the idea of "propositions related to job security." I have been rack- ing my brains to think what this can mean. "Kiss me, or you're fired!" That may be an example. If ladies are to be subjected to this kind of intimidation and innuen- do in our company offices, what is sacred in this nation? Another concern is that the report does not seem to dwell on the impact upon some poor sod of a boss or male co-worker who finds his proposals turned down. What does it do to a man's im- age, his self-respect, to be told that a girl would rather lose her job than snuggle up? An individual subjected to that kind of trauma could be ruined for life. It is strange that Women Against Sexual Harassment do not deal with this aspect. This makes me feel that their report may be a little one-sided. Is there a man's side in this question of sexual harassment? Is it possible for men to be sexually harassed by ladies? I am afraid that a poll of gentlemen, aboard the Castor Bus, for example, would weigh heavily in the affir- mative. Sexual harassment of men by women is, of course, a lot more subtle and discriminating than that waged by men. Most men would find it difficult to handle such a situation. Let us look at the farm situa- tion. Some good men have been ambushed in the chicken house. Others have been side-tracked around the milking pail. Quite a few decent chaps have been sur- rounded while innocently going about their business in the hay mow. My contention after a cursory review of the subject, is that this thing goes both ways. If men harass women, so do women, albeit more subtly, harass men. I think that Women Against Sexual Harassment should devote some time to study of this side of the question. After all, if it took two years to interview twenty-five women in Winnipeg, surely they could take another week or ten days and talk to a few fellows.
