CASTOR REVIEW Greely Grist Poplar Grove Camp Poplar Grove tent and trailer park is located on Highway 31 at the south end of Greely. It is owned by Phil and Eleanor McEvoy, and operated by them along with their three teenage children who have each learned to carry their share of responsi- bility. This family operation started in 1967 when the McEvoys found themselves caught in a frustrat- ing situation. They had pur- chased approved land for build- ing residential homes, but the municipality suddenly passed subdivision control and this made it impossible for them to preceed with their plans at that time. Since it was essential for them to proceed with their plans at that By Eleanor McEvoy time. Since it was essential for them to find a productive means for the land they decided to open a tourist camp and cater to the needs of the many tourists Centennial Year might bring. It was a good year to open such a business and each year there- after brought a steady increase in clientele. Over the years the McEvoys have continued to update their facilities. They have a swimming pool, recreation hall, ball field, tennis courts, mini-golf, child- ren's playground, laundromat, four modern washrooms, a small store, individual water, electric sewer hook-ups on spacious sites along with their office where Library news From Ina Kinkaid The Russell Public Library will present a musical concert by the popular "Rollins Duo' -- guitar and flute -- at Dr. Kinnaird Community Centre, Wednesday, June 13 at2p.m. The musical pair of Stephen and Cathy Rollins have per- formed in a number of concerts in the Ottawa area including the CBC Music Ottawa series. Poplar Grove has been visited by campers from every Canadian province, most states in the United States, as well as Great Britain, France, Germany, the Netherlands and other European countries. Since this campsite is only 14 miles from Ottawa's Parliament Build- ings it naturally attracts many tourists but the McEvoys wish to mention they appreciated the patronage and encouragement of Greely and area people especial- ly in the beginning years. Phil McEvoy has been appoint- ed to represent Eastern Ontario on the Ontario Private Camp- ground Association. This organi- zation prides itself in accepting members who through hard work and courteous treatment, have proven themselves by showing a definite desire to please the travelling public, and so in turn do a service to their community by encouraging tourists to come to their area. Remember the tourist who comes to camp is bound to leave some of his dollars at neighbouring gas stations, stores, and other businesses. During the summer months the McEvoys find themselves on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Much time is spent giving out tourist information. It is a tiring and demanding way of life but the rewards are many, especially when evening draws near and one notices the content- ed people around the campfires are customers who have become friends and chosen to return to Poplar Grove.
