CASTOR REVIEW One would think that the above ladies had just won a major tournament. This is not the case but the team considers the ringette season an outstanding success. For the first time since being formed a couple of years back the team comprised of ladies from Russell, Marvelville, Marionville and Metcalfe participated in league play with teams from Casselman and Ottawa. Kinnaird Community Centre on Sunday, March 11, the Russell Warrior Intermediates lost a heart break- er in overtime to Crysler ending what team officials regard as a most successful first year opera- tion. Crysler had won the previous Thursday night in Casselman to take a 3-2 advant- age in games. On Sunday with the score tied 2-2 and about three minutes remaining in the third period, Crysler scored to take a 3-2 lead. With little more than one minute to play Warrior coach Chris Fleming pulled his goalie in favour of a sixth attacker. With just 43 seconds left on the clock Peter Nooyen got the puck back to Wayne Warnock from a face-off and Wayne drilled it high into the Crysler net to knot the score at 3 apiece forcing the game into overtime. This proved to be the Warriors final goal of the season as Crysler scored early in the overtime period to eliminate the Warriors from further play. Despite the loss, the Warriors, comprised of all local players, made a lot of new fans in this their first year of operation. They worked extremely hard in the play-off series and with a bit of luck could have made it all the way to the finals. The team is made up of graduates from the Russell Minor Hockey system and team management wants it to remain this way in the future. As their way of saying thank you to the minor hockey organization, the Warrior team presented a $200 cheque to Pat Flynn, President of RMHA. At a time when most gratifying to see a team, such as the Warriors, showing concern for the young people in the area. With this kind of attitude they most certainly deserve the support of everyone in the community. Superb Show The Metcalfe Figure Skating Club concluded its activities for the season on Monday, March 26th with a most entertaining "Disco on Ice" show. Before a capacity crowd at the Metcalfe arena the different groups, from beginners to seniors, put on a delightful two hour performance. The many hours of practice were not in vain as each number came off flawlessly (well almost). The crowd was also treated to two guest skaters from the Minto Skating Club, Cheryl McEvoy and Marc Charbonneau. Per- forming solos for the Metcalfe Club were Janet Crerar, Nancy Lask, Laural James and Wendy Patterson. It is obvious that many hours of work went into the production. The beautiful cos- tumes, all hand made by mo- thers, along with spot lights, coloured lights surrounding the entire cushion boards and a spe- cially decorated entrance way in the shape of a record for the skaters added a touch of profes- sionalism that very much resem- bled the "miniature ice follies". Hard work by club instructor Bev Meikle of Russell and_ her assistants along with chair- persons Pat Berman and Kathy Millard assured a most success- ful finale to the skating season. R.A. News -- Russell roller disco By Garey Ris Beginning June 1, and running through to Aug. 31, there will be roller skating seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. at the Dr. Frank Kinnaird Community Cen- tre. Disco music will be provided and skates can be rented. The next teen dance will be held here in Russell on Fri. April 27. A dance will be staged once a month if the demand keeps up. If anyone is interested in joining the pool committee to give new ideas and suggestions they should get in touch with Dan Thompson at 445-2050. I have been informed that construction will commence on the fitness and nature trail on June |. The Old Time Music Makers Association just donated $1,200 to the Community Centre for the purchase of more tables and chairs for the upstairs hall. Applications are being accept- ed at the Community Centre for the Playground Program '79. Two girls will be sent to a course to become playground leaders in Russell. Applications are also being accepted for Assistant to Mana- ger for the Dr. Frank Kinnaird Community Centre until April 15, at the arena. Qualifications required are grade 12 education and experience in equipment and facilities. Jack Maclaren Sports Ramblings NHL-WHA MERGER Following lengthy periods of negotiations and many disap- pointments it now seems highly probable that a merger agreement between the NHL and the WHA will be finalized. It hasn't come any too soon for the good of hockey. It will put an end to the raiding of underage junior players but more importantly it should put a stop to the endless debating that has gone on for the past two years. I for one was fed up with reading on a Monday that an agreement was near only to be told by the following Thursday that the two leagues were further apart than ever. There are still a number of items to be settled but hopefully they will be resolved in time to begin play next season. It does disturb me just a bit that Federal Sports Minister Iona Campagnola was willing to donate $18.5 million to assist the three Canadian cities involved in the merger. The federal funding would apparently be used to increase arena seating with Quebec and Winnipeg to receive $5 million each and Edmonton $3.5 million. In addition she was also allowing $5 million for a new NHL-sized arena in Hamilton. Someone should inform the Minister that Hamilton would support professional hockey about as well as Tampa Bay, Florida -- a football town it is but a hockey town it is not. Edmonton already has a new arena complex which is of sufficient size to support an NHL franchise and besides I didn't realize that Albertans needed any federal money but I guess funnier things have happened during an election year. Mrs. Campagnola attempts to justify the $18.5 million expenditure by explaining that "'it's our game and I feel with only three of the 17 teams in the NHL Canadian, it is not in our best interests". While I applaud the entry of more Canadian teams into the NHL I can't really agree that it is 'our game"'. It seems to me that in the past few years our game has slowly been slipping beyond our grasp. If we're really interested in reclaiming the game it will have to start at the minor hockey level -- how about a few million there. MINOR HOCKEY With the arrival of spring, area minor hockey teams have once again packed away the gear for another season. During the winter season the Castor Review attempted to report on hockey activities by the Russell and Metcalfe & District Hockey Associations. I would like to thank two gentlemen, Pat Flynn of Russell and Blaine Ball who handles public relations for Metcalfe & District for faithfully providing details of their Association's activities. The Castor Review attempts to cover as many sports activities as possible but undoubtedly there are some we overlook. If readers would like a particular sports item included please contact me and every effort will be made to insert it in our sports pages. Fastball comeback? CDMHL Champions The following teams emerged as champions of their respective division following completion of play-offs. Atom "A" -- Metcalfe & District Mustangs (This team lost only one game during regular sea- son) Atom "B" -- Metcalfe & District Mustangs (This team went undefeated during the entire season) Pee Wee "A" -- Winchester Red Wings Pee Wee '"B" -- Metcalfe & District Mustangs Bantam "A" -- Russell Warriors (Lost only three games during regular season play ) Bantam '"B" -- _ Winchester Hawks Midget 'A'? -- _ Chesterville Flyers Midget "B" -- Russell Warriors Juvenile -- Morrisburg The above results indicate that the league has fairly good blalance with the exception of the Metcalfe & District dominance at the lower age divisions. Two weeks ago the end for the South-Carleton Fastball League seemed to be near. Teams from Osgoode, Richmond and Glouces- ter South had pulled out to play elsewhere leaving only Metcalfe, Embrun and Carlsbad from last year's line-up. However, in the past week new hope for the league's continued existence has emerged with the attempts by Doug Hay and Jim Gamble to form a team in Russell. Russell was forced to withdraw from the league a few years back because of a player shortage. Both Doug and Jim now feel that a sufficient number of young players have been developed to once again participate in the league provid- ed financial backing can be obtained.
