CASTOR REVIEW Potsdam wins first $.C.1.H.L. Tournament The first South Carleton Inter- mediate Hockey tournament was held at the Russell arena last weekend. Tournament organiz- ers have termed the outcome a complete success and have already started making plans for next year's event. Preliminary plans call for earlier scheduling of the tournament probably early in the new year so as not to conflict with ongoing play-off series. A total of 16 teams were entered and when play had been completed, on Sunday evening, the team from Potsdam emerged as tournament champions with Goulbourn Cougars as runners- up. Kars Aces claimed the "B"' championship title. Potsdam won their four games played defeating Morrisburg 6-5, N.D.H.Q. 3-0, Orleans 4-3, and in the final game, after 3 minutes of overtime, they edged Goulbourn 3-2. Kars Aces after losing their first game 2-0 to Orleans went on to defeat Russell Lions 6-3, Morrisburg 3-2 after nine minutes of overtime, and in the most exciting finish of the entire tournament defeated Lanark 2-1 after 18 minutes of overtime, the last 13 of which were played minus the two goalies. For their final victory the Aces were awarded the '"'B"' championship trophy donated by the Manotick Kiwanis plus $150.00, while Pots- dam received the Russell Lions championship trophy plus a $300.00 cash prize. In addition four beautiful trophies were awarded to individ- uals for outstanding perform- ances; the MVP trophy went to Mike Millotte from Lanark, the best defenceman to John Bonnar from Goulbourn, the best goalie to Glenn Wilson from Kars and the top scorer to Doug Byers from Potsdam who had 5 goals and 5 assists. Friday, April 7, 1978 Page 5 Jack Mclaren Sports Ramblings Jets defeat 'Old Boys"' Metcalfe and area hockey fans were taken back in time on March 25 when the Jets of the 1971-72 season took on the Jets of this season. The "older" Jets are still remembered by area fans because they not only captured the top award in the St. Lawrence league but they went on to win the O.D.H.A. title. Members of that team included Steve Morris and Bob Woods now of the Russell Raiders. The team was coached that year by the late Bill Lineger of Russell. However, that Saturday night belonged to the '"'younger" Jets as they skated to a 4-2 victory before the largest crowd of the season at the Metcalfe arena. Two goals late in the third period proved to be the difference. Scoring for the winning team were Barry Hicks, Jeff Holmes, Tyrone Franey and Greg tsepigee Replying for the losers were Hugh Doyle and Dean Holmes. Ladies Ringette A game which has become popular with Metcalfe and area girls and has now found its way into the lives of a group of Marvelville area girls is ringette. This is a most unusual game and one which I doubt I will ever be able to understand. The Marvelville team, with some outside help from Marionville, Metcalfe and Russell, have been practising faithfully every Sunday night at the Russell arena since last fall. Their improvement at mastering the skills of the game has been remarkable and recently they have participated in a number of exhibition games against teams from Casselman, Gloucester and Metcalfe. With very little protective equipment worn there is quite frequently bruising and aching suffered after each game and like hockey the referee gets blamed for the bad calls. Recently the ladies have been practising very hard for a tournament they have entered in early April at Gloucester. Win or lose it will write 'finis' to a season which has produced a lot of fun and good fellowship. Novice Tournament On Saturday morning, April 8 the novice group (6-8 yrs. old) takes over the Russell arena for a hockey tournament. Play begins at 8 a.m. and concludes at 12 noon. This a most interesting age level to watch so be sure to come out and cheer the little guys on to victory.
