ORTS Peter Van Dusen Jets -- penalties prove problem If you like hard-hitting, fast-pace hockey you'll love the Metcalfe Jets and the Ottawa and District Minor Hockey Association Junior "B"' league. Several years ago I enjoyed a brief stint as a left winger on a Quebec Junior '"'B" team and watching the Jets play brought back pleasant and unpleasant memories of those days. It's fiercely competitive hockey. Players don't want to be demoted to lower calibre leagues and they play their hardest in hopes of being recruited by "A'division teams. There are long, hard hours of practice, often scheduled in the wee hours of the morning and 5 a.m. when you walk out the door the cold hits you like a two-by-four in the teeth. Then you have to skate hard for two hours while your entire body threatens strike action against you. Some teams will practice three times a week. Add nine hours of game time to that, plus the travel time and you're talking 25 hours of hockey a week. You really gotta love the game to do it. I watched the Jets play the Navan Grads. All in all it was a pretty fair game, but penalties proved to be the difference. Metcalfe skaters spent a good deal of time in the "sin-bin'and when they were shorthanded the Grads took it to them. The officiating for the game was pitiful. Mind you I have seen worse I just can't remember when. The red armbands would have better suited the referee had he been a medic with the Red Cross. I'm not trying to single out any particular ref but bad officiating is common to Junior '"'B" hockey. It was the same when I played in Quebec; they let too much go. I sincerely believe that less stick swinging leads to a higher quality of hockey; after all its hard to concentrate on play-making when you're fending off elbows and cross-checks. The Jets are having a hard time putting together a string of victories. They are presently in fourth place in the six team division, one point ahead of Alexandria and five points back of Navan. If they can play consistent hockey and shy away from useless penalties wins may come a little easier. Daly McLaughlin is a tall, rangy centerman who excels at playmaking and backchecking; he knows where to be and when to be there. Dale Carson is a Jimmy Roberts type of player; dig, dig, dig. Frank Testa leads the Northeast division in scoring and it's obvious why. He knows that little piece of frozen rubber belongs in the net and when he gets his stick on it that's usually where it ends up. Perhaps the biggest surprise of the season for the Jets is the play of 15 year-old Greg McLaren. While he is two years the junior of most players in the league he is proving to be the steadiest defenceman on the team. He has size, speed and a tremendous shot from the point. McLaren has all the makings of a fine hockey player and good fortune could see him enjoy considerable success in this sport in the future. The Metcalfe Jets have the talent to beat any team in the division, its simply a matter of putting it all together; but then isn't that what winning is all about? NEXT ISSUE: Embrun Panthers.... fey e Panthers undefeated The Embrun Panthers continu- ed their lossless streak posting several victories over the holiday season. They emerged victorious from the Beauharnois tourna- ment defeating Lacombe 7-2 and trouncing Beauharnois 11-3. They then went on to edge Loyola Grads 4-3 in overtime to take top honours in the tournament. Dave Dixie scored the winning goal in that contest. On December 18 the Panthers downed Pembroke 6-5 and two weeks later they defeated King- ston 5-1. The Kingston players left the ice after one and a half periods of play claiming that the Embrun squad were playing dirty hockey. Mike Cayer had 2 goals with singles going to Dixie, Payette and Larose. The Panthers elected a new executive with Raymond Greg- oire as President, Maurice Lem- ieux as Vice-President and Sec. Treasurer and Yves Rollin as manager. The Panthers are in action again this month with games against Carleton University, and Boston and Loyola in the prestig- ious Molson tournament in Sorel, Quebec. The leading scorers for the Panthers are Dave Dixie with 20 points followed by Dave Hunt with 19, Michel Cayer with 18, Richard Larose with 15, John Hutton with 14, Jean Payette with 13. Benders holding Rally The Bogie Benders snowmobile club is sponsoring a 40 mile rally on Saturday, January 21. The proposed route for the rally will follow the banks of the Castor River to the east, breaking off through wooded areas and then doubling back to Russell. The rally will be followed in the evening by a supper and dance. Secretary-Treasurer Bruce Woolsley reports that the Bogie Benders are re-locating their clubhouse in Sullivan's Bush north of Russell. For more information on the rally contact Mr. Woolsley at 445-2897. Castor Review has been phenom- enal. To date thirty couples have expressed interest in the venture that would see both ski and snowmobile clubs using the same trails. Ski trails mentioned by the Bogie Benders snowmobile club would parallel its snowmobile trails and would be clearly marked. The clubs have received a grant of $500 to cover expenses in the new undertaking. Meetings of the executive will be held to determine the allocation of funds and the location of trails. "We are all ready to go and ready for the ski club' Mr. Woolsley said. He hopes the new project will be in full swing within the next two weeks.
