CASTOR REVIEW The Castor Valley Figure Skating Club by Suzanne Schroeter A visit to the Russell Arena any Friday evening will encourage anyone who ever worried about a Canadian skating star to replace Lynn Nightingale. The ice surface is a beehive of activity as three instructors put close to 100 children through 12 levels of badge work. During four years, the Castor Valley Figure Skating Club has grown from one hour of group instruction to five hours. This year, the club also offers a mothers' class on Wednesday evenings -- a great example of meeting the needs of the community. Instructors Donna Bond, Sandra O'Neill and Nancy Clovan from the Gloucester Skating Club offer group and private lessons from beginners' to figures and dance. In order to raise funds to meet costs not covered by the Recreation Association, the skating club held a Christmas draw which netted $318. Congratulations to Joyce O'Reilly who won the draw. A hearty thank you is sent to all those who organized and supported this December fund raising project. Any inquiries concerning the figure skating club may be direbted to the able executive; Carol Webster, president; Connie Lauzon, vice-president; Chris Edmonston, secretary; Sharon Bogden, treasurer; and Chris Walter, R.A. representative. While I wasn't expecting to see any Triple Toe Loops or Flying Camel Spins, I did miss those little velvet and satin-lined skating skirts we wore many years ago when I was involved in figure skating lessons. Oh well, blue jeans don't seem to be stopping today's skaters. In Russell there's lots of enthusiasm and that's what it takes to make tomorrow's champions.
