Go ahead; don't be afraid that I'll answer negatively or chide you for asking silly questions. Ask me; don't be shy. Good! Well, my answer is a simple one and I don't need time to think about it. I think Intermediate hockey is good, darn good; at least that's the case here in Russell. There now, that wasn't so hard was it? I had my first glimpse of the 1977-78 edition of the Russell Raiders this month and I must say I was favorably impressed. The Raiders certainly cannot touch a National Hockey League team for talent or savoir-faire, but then again no one has mentioned Russell as the site of the next N.H.L. expansion team. What we have here is good, entertaining hockey. Team executive Ron Conway points out that Russell is one of the few teams in the 7-club South Carleton Intermediate Hockey League (SCIL) that draws consistent crown support for every home game. For those of you who don't understand the workings of the SCIL, I'll explain briefly some of the rules and regulations. Each team is allowed to carry 18 players, 5 of which may be imports. An import is a player recruited from outside the immediate playing district. The Raiders imports are defencemen John Laurence and Terry O'Neil and forwards Loyal Hughes, Steve Fox and Dan Chamberlin. Every team in the SCIL makes it to the playoffs and the Raiders' performance over the past few years has been highly commendable. They have always made it to the quarter-finals and two years ago they came within one game of winning the league championship. This year's team has everyone looking toward the final game once again. Rookie coach Wayne Hughes, formerly a netminding hopeful in the training camps of both the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Atlanta Flames, contends the Raiders can finish no worse than third if they can play consistent hockey all season. "It takes a little time but we've got a great bunch of guys with a lot of talent." Captain Kenny Quaile, a third year Raiders veteran says this year's club looks impressive. '"'We certainly have the potential on paper as long as we can put it together on the ice. We've got great crowd support, a good bunch of rookies, good team spirit and great behind the scenes management."' I was highly impressed with the work of several players who will prove instrumental in deciding the success of the Raiders this season. When you're at a Raiders game, keep and eye on Loyal Hughes. The diminutive forward is a perfect example of what coaches call "a great two-way player." He skates well, handles a puck masterfully and backchecks tenaciously. Kenny Quaile, playmaker, digger and team captain keeps the Raiders' machine running smoothly. The goaltending tandem of Denis Brisson and Doug Hay provide more than adequate service between the pipes. Along the blueline, the Raiders are solid. Their defensive corps has what a great many teams are looking for size, speed and offensive-minded defencemen. The Raiders look as good as any of the teams in the league and are sure contenders for the SCIL championship. Intermediate hockey is entertaining and you couldn't spend a buck any better way. Panthers pounce The Embrun Panthers downed the Montreal Pyros 7-5 in Montreal on November 13. Dave Hunt and Michel Cayer led the Embrun attack with 2 goals each while Gilles Collette, Richard Larose, and Chris Hayes added singles. Daniel Cournoyer scored twice for the Pyros. One week later the Panthers doubled Goulbourn 4-2. Mike Cayer scored twice for the winners with single markers coming from Yves Plouffe and Gilles Collette. Paul Denomme counted twice for Goulbourn. Panthers' netminder Wayne Hughes stopped 32 shots to register the victory. The Panthers take to the ice again on Dec. 3 when they meet a team from Ithica N.Y. and Dec. 4 when they play Kingston. Face- off time for. both games is 8:00 p.m. Jack McLaren Sports Ramblings Russell Minor Softball teams, competing in the Russell-Carle- ton Softball League, finished a very successful season winning three of four league champion- ship trophies. The Weitse Posthumus Trophy went to the Russell Squirts, the Russell Lions Trophy was won by the Russell Pee-Wees and the Dr. Frank Kinaird Trophy was cap- tured by the Russell Bantams. The Russell Midgets, believed by many to be the best team in their division, were forced to forfeit their playoff series due to a shortage of eligible players. They did, however, manage to win 2 major tournaments during the summer, the first at Cornwall and the second at Russell. Russell Minor Hockey teams have begun league competition. Teams in the league include Russell, Winchester, Metcalfe, Greely, Kemptville and Chester- ville. The Russell teams, known as the Warriors, play home games every Tuesday night starting at 6 p.m. For the first time Russell has entered a Juvenile team giving boys between the ages of 16 and 18 an opportunity to participate at the competitive level. Just a reminder that on December 9, when Goulbourn are the visitors, the Raiders manage- ment has scheduled a 'Pub Night" upstairs at the arena. O.T.HLS. Sports The sports scene at Osgoode Township High School and around the Carleton Board of Education was very exciting this past fall and here is a recap of what happened. First of all, the football team finished the exhibition season with a record of one win and two losses. Both losses came at the hands of North Dundas. Dundas won the first game 27-4 as Gary Manwell scored the lone touchdown on a four-yard run. Alex Marsden also scored this one on a 25 yard punt return but it was called back because of an offside. O.T.H.S. lost a close 8-7 game a week later. In their win over Ashbury, the defence played very well as Osgoode hammered Ashbury 35-6. Mr. Kerruish says he expects there will bea team next year. - The junior girl's basketball made it to the playoffs but were bumped out by J. S. Woodsworth when they lost 64 - 28. The senior team wasn't as fortunate as they finished the season with a loss to Bell by a score of 39-32. The Ottawa-Carleton Board Soccer finals were held on November 8th in the mud and cold weather at Rideau High School. This year, both championships were won by the Carleton Board. Allan Caughey scored at the 26th minute of the first half and Pete Green recorded the shutout as Bell edged Canterbury 1-0. In the senior game, it was no contest as Gloucester hammered Glebe 5-1. John Anderson got the hat trick and Mark Ledger scored a pair. Next year, Wally Hindle from Earl of March will take over from Mr. Bangay who has finished his two year stint.
