Russell Fair -- It's back on track and better than ever Congratulations to organizers of the 1977 Russell Fair which was probably the most success- ful in the 119-year-old attract- ion's history. Fine weather, a streamlined midway and top name perform- ers drew more than 5,000 people to the area's first fall fair. Visitors this year were treated to the largest number of participants ever in the cattle, horse, sheep and domestic science competitions and exhib- its. Several years ago, the same fair seemed destined to play itself out as a_ result of successive years of bad weath- er. Thanks to the efforts of Don Graham, president of Russell Agricultural Society's fair com- mittee, the show went on again and brought the house down. A tip o' the hat to Don and the community at large which rallied to the cause. With this kind of imput, the fair can only get bigger and better. Thanks to Norm Bowley for providing last month's Sidewalk Talk. Letters to the Editor | think you are doing a marvelous job. Some issues are full of new faces and new names and | think of discontinuing the paper. Then along comes one with tidbits from my age group, so | read it, cut out the highlights and put them in a letter to Peg, can't send the whole paper as it costs about ninety cents first class mail which reminded me it was time to contribute towards the printing and postage. Hear you are having a good summer. We had a great deal of rain in June with hail on June 14th and 24th, but hot for here right now. Now its hard to tell whether its the hail that made the holes in the potatoe leaves or the slugs. Was pleased to hear there were people in the Chester Loucks house. My best wishes to them and to the ones who make the paper a SUCCESS. Sincerely, Jean T. Campbell To the Editor of the Russell Review: It is with pleasure that | express my thanks for the magnificent repaving of our County Road No. 3 from the Ottawa-Regional boundary through to Embrun. It is satisfying to see our tax dollars being spent in such a judicious fashion during this a provincial election year although one wonders what the reasoning is when plans indicate sanitary sewer installation in Russell within the near future. Be that as it may, why isn't the job finished? Normally one would expect the centre lines to be repainted, if not immediately, then within the next two or three weeks at least. It is indeed unfortunate that it takes accid- ents and perhaps a death or two to spur those responsible into taking appropriate action. | only hope that with the coming of winter, the country can spare the few necessary tax dollars to purchase a gallon or two of paint. Wilma is the 1977-78 Horticultural Queen. -- Photo by M. Rowsell. Horticultural Society News The Flower Show in_ the Anglican Church Hall, Aug. 20th had 205 entries by Adults and Juniors. The display of good flowers, beautifully arranged was a pleasure to view. Dessert and Coffee was served in the Sr. Citizens Hall in the afternoon. The meeting was chaired by the Presdent, Mrs. Doris Graham, and the prizes were awarded. The _ junior exhibits were especially good. Mr. Thons of Morrisburg, District Director of our area brought greetings from the area and noted that we had an excellent display of flowers and one of the best quality he had viewed this year. He congrat- ulated us on the flower show. Mrs. G. Baillon reported on the Junior work and is very proud of her juniors. She also gave the prizes to winners. Wilma Nyenkamp was chosen queen for this year for most points in exhibits and her garden She received the Chantel Trophy which was presented by Mrs. Paquette, and was crowned Queen by last year's queen, Lorraine Thibeault. The Guy Springs Perpetual Trophy was donated by Mr. and Mrs. Emerson Kinkaid and was won by Mrs. Margaret Burton for the most points in arrange- ments. The Wm. J. Pelot Trophy was won by Mrs. Burton also for the most points in the flower show. The Queen had the pleasure of drawing the numbers for door prizes. On September 19 we are having a pot luck dinner at 7 p.m. in the Anglican Hall with Donna Duquette of Plant Decor, as guest speaker. Be sure and come as this will be interesting to you. Our district 1 annual meeting will be held at Upper Canada Village on Sept. 25th. This is always an interesting meeting. Robinson Junior Report Once again the gardening season is coming to aclose, and with excellent results in the Junior Gardening Program. The participants gardens were jud- ged at the beginning of August. The first three places were awarded as follows: 1st, Mary Ann Nyenkamp 2nd Patricia Nyenkamp Tied for 3rd, Karen and Nancy Bekkers. The first three places were given prizes of $4, $3, and $2 respectively and all other participants received $1.00 each. Saturday, August 20th was the day of the annual flower show. It was held this year at the Anglican Church Hall and was a big success. Junior and Teen- age participation in the show was much increased over previous years. Twelve young participants entered 51 arrange- ments in the competiton. The highlight of the show was the crowning of the new queen, Wilma Nyenkamp by last year's queen, Lorraine Thibeault. Wilma won the honour and The Chantal Trophy by having the greatest number of accumulated points in the gardening and flower arranging competitions.
