Thank you Mrs. Steele for letting us get to know you. - Suzanne Schroeter THE RUSSELL RINKS (From an address by Mrs. Kinkaid) To those of you who are not familiar with Russell history, and to those of you who would like to have your memories refreshed; I would like to tell you the stories of our Russell rinks. This is the third one to be built on the same sight. In 1912 due to the vision of Mr. John Duncan MacPhail, who was a cattle dealer, the first rink was built. The frame was constructed in a half circle 50 feet high and it was covered with tin. To make the frame 10 foot boards were used and they were put on their edge overlapping at the corners and nailed together with 10 inch spikes. It wasn't properly braced and before it was completed it collapsed in a heavy wind storm and one man, a Mr. Lowe was killed. However, not to be defeated, George Browne and several others volunteered to help rebuild it. They took out the 10 inch spikes,
