10 The Castor Review, February, 1982 for Kids Collages are fun By Donna Nordenstrom The materials required for col- lages are readily available and the procedures are simple. Use lightweight cardboard or con- struction paper for the background. To this glue scraps of paper, fabric, straws, buttons, pebbles, pipe cleaners, or whatever else is available. The young child will have fun doing a random group- ing while the older child may prefer a more structured arrange- ment. One of the collages Jena en- joyed doing was a birdhouse. She made the frame out of popsicle sticks and then coloured a few leaves in the background. She drew and cut out the shape of a bird and then pasted it inside the birdhouse. She glued a walnut shell to the body for a three- dimensional effect. The final touch was a_ beautiful blue wingfeather that she had "col- lected'? from the floor of the arena after one of the children's parties. This is a great way for your child to use his "treasured collec- tions". Further, the bird does not have to be realistic as your child may prefer to conjure up one from his imagination. Older children may prefer to do a burlap collage. Glue burlap on to a piece of cardboard that has been cut approximately one inch smaller than the fabric. Fringe the edges of the burlap and compose a picture using felt or other fabric. Buttons, pennies, or beads may be added as a focal point. These pictures make attractive wall decorations or gifts. Some collages will. be on display at Maria Bianca's. SAILBOATS - Cut a slice of whole wheat bread into the shape of a sailboat. butter and spread with filling. Cut two sails for each boat from enriched bread and place them on the whole wheat bread, leaving a narrow strip of whole wheat showing between sails for the boat's mast. Cut the hull of the boat from whole wheat bread and place it~ over filling. Cut a flag of pimento and place it at the top of the mast. To simulate portholes and waves, pipe cream cheese on the lower part of the hull. For added interest and color, coconut that has been tinted green with food coloring may be placed on the cream cheese waves. FACES With a cooky cutter, cut slices of whole wheat and enriched bread into circles, about 2 1/2 in- _ches in diameter. Butter the bread circles and spread a filling bet- ween each two. To make the face, pipe cream cheese around the top of circle, and sprinkle grated carrot over the cream cheese to simulate hair. Use' 'strips: :of raisins' for eyebrows and nose, diamond- shaped cucumber peel or green pepper for eyes, and pimento cut in half-moon shape for mouth.
