8 The Castor Review, January, 1982 -- Metcalfe Jets replace coach Despite top league standing. by Jack McLaren The Metcalfe Jets, currently leading the South-East Junior B Hockey Division by a comfortable margin have released coach Peter Derooy and replaced him with Brian Kerfoot and Gary Scharfe. ' Club President Bill Wammes said that making such a move, after the team had lost only two games thus far, was an extremely tough decision to reach. It was, however, one that team manage- ment felt they had to make and early January was the proper time to do it. Kerfoot and Scharfe are no strangers to the hockey scene. Both have previous coaching ex- "perience although not at the Junior level. Brian previously coached the Gloucester Ranger Minor Hockey organization while Gary, in addition to previous coaching experience with' local hockey teams has been, and in fact continues to be, heavily in- volved in the Executive of the Gloucester Rangers Minor Hockey Association. Kerfoot stresses basic fun- damentals and is certainly a no- nonsense type of coach. He feels he has excellent talent on the team and will probably attempt to develop a well balanced attack rather than depending on only a few to do all the work. In the long run this type of strategy will pay the most dividends. Recent additions to the team in- clude Brent Brooker from the Ot- tawa Senators and Tim Cavan from the Brockville Braves. These players along with high-scoring Marc Seguin, Rick Nesseth; playmakers Gary McGee, Kevin McManus and excellent two-way players like Jim Kerfoot and Doug Scharfe will certainly ensure an excellent brand of hockey for their fans during the rest of the year. Anchoring the defence is Greg McLaren who has one of the hardest and most accurate shot from the point in Junior B hockey. Stewart Patterson, a Gloucester Ranger midget AA graduate, has provided outstan- ding goaltending in a number of key games and rates as one of the best in Junior B hockey. . The Jets management has once again put together a leading con- tender. In some ways it is pro- bably stronger than last year's team, and management obviously feels that the coaching change is what was needed in an effort to make it all the way to the League Championship. The Jets have had three players named to the "All Star'? Junior B East team which takes on the West team at the new Brockville arena on January 27 at 7:30 p.m. Selected were centreman Marc Seguin, their top scorer; defenceman Greg McLaren, third in team scoring and hard working Doug Scharfe, RUSSELL ATOM As : WIN IN CHESTERVILLE The Russell Warriors Atom A hockey team recently won the B Cham- pionship at the annual Chesterville Minor Hockey Tournament. In their first game they faced a very strong team from Richmond and came out on the short end of a 9-0 score. Richmond eventually went on to win the entire tournament. In the se-- cond game they faced their neighbours, Metcalfe, and won 3-1. The final game saw them facing Spencerville and the ending couldn't have been more thrilling. Russell was trailing 3-2 at the end of the se- cond period, tied it at 3 -- all in the third and after two 5 minutes over- time sessions it still remained 3-3. Then came the shootout. Shooting for Russell were Richard Hamelin, Brian Fleming, and Keith Cheshire. The first two scored while Russell goalie Alain Deschamps foiled both Spencerville shooters thus giving Russell a 5- 3 win. This was Richard Hamelin's third goal of the game. Others were scored by Michelle Geerts and Brian Fleming. Hamelin was picked as Russell's MVP for the tournament. With the win Russell was awarded a trophy for the B Championship. The following Thursday the Atom A team visited Metcalfe for a CDMHL league game and again proved superior with a 2-0 shutout. Scoring was Brian Fleming and Richard Hamelin while Alain Deschamps got the shutout. The team is coached by Lorne Clost. Ramblings Skating program goes well by Mary Inglis The 1981-82 Russell Figure Skating Club Season is well under- way with 75 skaters participating. In addition, we have received a good response to the Power Skating Program with 15 skaters registered. Under our N.S.T. Badge Pro- gram we have awarded 40 badges to date as well as 15 badges in the Power Skating Program. We began the year with only one Professional, Renee Ladouceur, and have recently hired an additional Pro, Jill Taillefer, for the remainder. of the year. Both our pros are available for private lessons as well as their time spent in group lessons. Five members of our "club at- tended the Junior Coaching Clinic in Winchester and passed, as did one Supervisory Coach. At the Senior Level the Russell Skating Club hosted a C.F.S.A. Test Night on December 9th. with the Casselman and Rockland, clubs attending. Kim Ambroise successfully completed her three Preliminary Tests -- Figures, Dance and Free Style; Chantal-Paquette passed her Dutch Waltz and Canasta; Jeannette Krabicha passed her Dutch Waltz; and Christine Laframboise, Billie Jo Bogden and Jodi Chaters all passed their Swing. Sprouts win tournament The Russell Sprouts men's broomball team emerged as B Division Champions at the Dun- das Panthers Tournament held in . December at Chesterville. The Sprouts are one of four teams which participate in a Russell town league every Monday night at the Dr. F. Kinnaird Community Centre. By virtue of losing their first game, a close one to Sum- merstown 2-1, the Sprouts drop- ped down to the B side. A shutout over Long Sault 1-0 put them into the final champion- ship game. To no surprise their opposition was the Russell North Stars and when the game was over the Sprouts had prevailed 3-1 to capture the B Championship. Russell Broomball League Standings Team WL T. The final score was 24-0 for the hometown Jets. From the drop of the puck it was obvious to the hardy fans who had showed up, on what was one of the coldest days of the winter, that this was going to be no con- test. First of all, the Prescott team had only ten players which includ- ed two goaltenders. It seems to me that the Ex- ecutive of the Junior B Hockey League should make it their business to determine why a team shows up to play a game with so few players. If the reasons given are unacceptable, then penalties should be imposed. If it con- tinues, the offending team should be expelled from the league. I suspect that league officials will take the easy way out and do~ nothing. Prescott may well have had valid reasons on this par- ticular. Sunday but I, for one, would take considerable convinc- ing based on some of their past performances this season. I really felt sorry for the ten boys that did arrive. They tried their best but it was too much to ask of anyone. In fact, it must have been most embarassing for them. Furthermore, what did it do for Metcalfe -- exactly nothing. Although the Jets players con- trolled the puck for about 55 minutes of the game and could have scored many more goals, I got the impression that after the first period it was a bit of a bore -- for them and they would just as soon the game would come to an end. ' As it was, they were without three or four of their regulars but nobody really noticed. The fans were disappointed and coaches Brian Kerfoot and Gary Scharfe weren't exactly overjoyed. Brian was most thankful that it was a Sunday and the boys had five days to forget about it and get ready for Cardinal and Mor- risburg the following weekend. The Jets are a good hockey team with a well-balanced attack and with their recent coaching change they should get even better but not with an opponent that lets you blink the red light 24 times.
