Just a little drink will do The OPP reports that six people in the Russell-Embrun area had their driving licences revoked for 24 hours under the new drinking and driv- ing laws of the province. The new law, which was passed just before Christmas allows police officers to suspend a drivers licence for a day if a roadside breathalizer test shows that the driver has more than .05 alcoholic content in his bloodstream. Anything over .08 on the test and you can be charged with drunken driving. The OPP says it will continue its roadside testing in the area. So watch your tippling. Benny's break-in not for booze Not a drop of booze was touched when somebody broke into Benny's Tavern in Russell. "They broke into the cash register and took the float from the back room", said Madeline Griffith who works at the tavern. '*] think it was somebody older trying to make it look like it was young lads. We got hit on a slow day, so we lost only $260 -- but no liquor was touched". This is Benny's second robbery. Last fall somebody broke in and took some quarts of beer. ° And the Winner is... Suzanne Thibeault of Russell won the microwave oven contest at Maria Bianca's Gift and Variety Shop. The picture shows Dennis McGann, editor of the Castor Review, helping Bruno Santilli (right) draw Suzanne's name. Bruno has promised another contest but won't : say what it will be. "Tt'll be a surprise" says Bruno, co-owner of Maria Bianca's. Join the Russell PTA Are you an active member, of the parents' working troupe? Or are you just contented that you're included with the group. Do you attend the meetings, and mingle with the flock? Or do you stay at home, to criticize and knock. Do you take an active part to help our work along? Or are you satisfied to be the kind that just belongs. Do you ever come and help us build up brick by brick? Or leave the work to just a few and talk about. the clique. Come to the meetings often and help us with your heart "We need you as a parent to take an active part." Think if over Parent you know right from wrong Are you an active Parent, or do you just belong? The Parents' Association of Russell Public School have at present many important issues underway; i.e., two-way radios for the buses, portables, possibility of a 4-year old kindergarten, playground, choir uniforms, carnival float. At our last meeting, held on Jan. 12, these items were discussed, however, parent interest is lacking as we only had four parents, plus the executive in attendance. If you wish to see the Parents' Association continue, your support must be shown by attending the meetings. The next meeting will be held on February 8; at 8 p.m., at the school. The future of the Parents' Association depends on your participation at this time. Robert Wright of Ottawa found out how icy Concession Street, near the old schoolhouse, can be. Fortunately, there were no injuries. Metcalfe curling alive by Richard Starnes Metcalfe Curling Club is alive, thriving and fighting back. ~ Two months ago the province condemned the club's_ head- quarters as unsafe. Now, en- thusiastic members are curling four nights a week at out-of-town centres, and Wintario has promis- ed an enrichment grant for rebuilding with the proSpect of more money to come. Developments are pleasing club president Bob Reynolds. "T'm very happy with the way in which the club has stuck together during these disruptions," he said. "Clearly members feel as much a part of the club now as they did at the start of the season."' The club has negotiated ice time twice a week at Ottawa's Lansdowne Park and once a week at Manotick and Russell. '*A number of parents have ex- pressed an interest in a four-year- old kindergarten," said Dean Loucks, principal of the school. '*And the school's PTA is doing a survey in the community. "Tt would be a major undertak- ing because there are no facilities available," said Mr. Loucks. "Additional facilities would have to be built."' French radio station here? Prescott-Russell may soon have the province's first French- language community-sponsored radio station. A $13,000 federal government grant to study the feasibility of the idea was recently obtained. The study is scheduled to take about four months. The radio station, if it does pro- ve viable, would broadcast on the FM band. "*We believe there is a need for such a means of communication"' said Roch Chartrand, chairperson of the four-member study group. ® Snow Removal Chantal 'Developments Ine. "It's good to see such en- thusiasm," he said. Troubles began for the Metcalfe club two years ago when the pro- vince's building code was am- mended. The Metcalfe building, along with others across the pro- vince, was condemned. The club was allowed to con- tinue operating the building under monitored conditions until November, when the province withdrew the monitoring system. Dennis McGann photo The building had to close its doors. Mr. Reynolds said the major problems was the snow load, not only on the roof of the clubhouse -- which is flat -- but also on the sides of the building, which were in danger of being pushed in. Since November, the club has been working at fundraising and awaiting news from Wintario. Recently, it received word of an enrichment grant from the provin- cial lottery, two-thirds of the money necessary to rebuild the club to the same dimensions as before. scotiabanks THE BANK OF NOVA SCOTIA RUSSELL 445-2880 'Grow With Us' Scotia Bank e Grocery @ Magazines ® Crafts ® Gifts Hallmark MritFiana' GIFT & VARIETY SHOP 95 Mill Street, Russell 445-2875 © Deli (new specials every eek) Valentine Gifts, Cards, and Party Ware Hours Mon.-Fri., 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sat. & Sun., 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
