Castor Concessions with Peter Romme A day in court or watching our taxdollars go down the tube. Last fall, the wife had occasion to spend a day in court. I have just now recovered well enough to discuss it without throwing a temper-tantrum. The experience was enough to make a preacher swear. Bear with me while I retell the terrible tale. Nancy (the wife) was _ sub- poenaed to be a witness in a traffic violation case. The summons call- ed for her to be there at precisely 10 in the morning. I went along for moral support. Long before. the appointed time there was a great crowd of lawyers, police of- ficers and court officials, stan- ding, sitting, and even a few of them, running around. Pro- ceedings however, did not get under way until 10:45. After one case was heard it was decided to have a short 5 minute break. In true bureaucratic fashion, the 5 minute break only lasted half an hour. Things really moved along, after that until 12:30 when we all went for a quick lunch. By this time no one had been tried yet, postponements, remands, missing witnesses and vacationing lawyers, etc., etc. all contrived to put their thumb on the scales of Justice. At 2 on the dot every one was back in the court room anxious to get back to work. One poor lad was found guilty of growing a bit of that whacky tabaccy among his mother's geraniums; the misfor- tunate young man was fined $25, and because of the economic slowdown in his line of business and the fact that his inventory had been confiscated, the judge kindly allowed him time, I believe it was Russell Women's Institute The March meeting of the Russell Village Women's Institute was held in the Catholic Church Hall. Mrs. Coby Bols, and Mrs. Ina Henry hosted the meeting. The roll call "One thing I can do to make a neighbor feel at home" was answered by 18 members and one visitor. Lunch was served by Mrs. Lydia Nyenkamp and Mrs. Bols. 6 weeks, to come up with the cash. Presumably, if by then he has not paid the fine the crown will take him to court. We had one more break and sharp at 4 in the afternoon, Nancy had her big moment, by 4:15 the case was dismissed and every one went happily homeward, another trying day behind them. All, that is, but me. When I think of hiring a lawyer at $50 per hour and then have him stand around -for some 5 hours I want to cry, This story would seem to pro- vide good grounds to justify cheating on your taxes, but don't try it. They will haul you into the nearest courtroom, charge interest on overdue accounts, and I doubt if his honor will allow you any time to pay. All this gassing about money matters made me forget that I am supposed to be writing about far- ming and now I am all out of it, gas that is, although money is not too plentiful around here either. As for farming, it seems there was a fellow from town who pur- chased a farm somewhere in Russell township with the idea of making it big in the cattle in- dustry. For financial reasons he had to start small; in fact he went to Leo's Livestock and bought: just one cow and was going to build his herd from there. After one year the cow had not calved yet and his neighbor told him that he was lacking a bull so our farmer went back to the salesbarn and traded in his cow for a bull.
