Page 4 Jack McLaren Ramblings = Recreation Galore . When city dwellers think of moving out to a small town community one of their main concerns seems to be "What will we do for our recrea- tion needs"? Little do they realize the abundance of recreation facilities and programs awaiting their arrival. We, who have lived in our small community for several years, probably don't realize the vast number of activities that are actually available. I took stock recently and was quite amazed at the final tally and I'm sure I didn't get them all. The Dr. Kinnaird Community Centre offers a variety of activities and is a facility of which the entire community should be proud. Within a short period of time an extensive minor hockey program will be under- way for local boys while girls will soon be enjoying a season of figure skating instruction. The older "boys" are not left out and they too will form four old timers hockey teams which will "assure" every player of top physical condition come next April. As well, public skating will be offered along with Moms and Tots skating during the morning hours. For the more active and athletically inclined the local Warriors team is looking for new recruits at the intermediate hockey level. a full season of curling not only for adults because in fact many of its more prominent curlers are teenagers. A new cross-country ski trail was thusiasts. Summer activities are equally as numerous. Leading the way is a most successful minor softball program for both boys and girls. This year, for the first time, the men of the community organized four Lob ball teams and recently staged a most successful Lob ball tournament. Inside the Dr. Kinnaird Community Centre boys and girls got their in- itial taste of ball hockey. " : A group of ladies put together an evening of softball fun. In the past an exercise program and a night of basketball has taken place at the Public School gym. It is not unusual to look out your front window and see joggers on their way out for a three mile run. Private lessons in horsemanship are offered at area Stables. During the hot summer months one can cool off at the Community Pool and younger people are welcomed to participate on the local Swim Team which performed exceptionally well in area swim meets this past season. : There are probably other activities which I have overlooked, but the next time you see someone putting in time on the local street corner because there isn't anything to do in this community, don't believe them -- there is something for everyone and for the most part volunteers make it happen -- what more could one ask for. Next door to the Community Centre, the Russell Curling Club offers | opened last year plus plenty of open areas for the snowmobiling en- Russell Beavers -- 1980 Eastern Ont. Champs By Pat Ruest General Burns was the scene of the Eastern Ontario Champion- ships; and Russell dominated the other 13 teams involved. The Eastern Ontario Championships -- known as the regional -- is an annual event hosted by the City of Nepean, usually at the end of the summer swimming season. It is the largest meet of the season with all the teams from the region com- peting. After years of competition, our team events finally fell together making the big win possible. A large number of good swimmers signed up at the beginning of the summer and with lots of work and practise the results began to show. The team did well at all the local meets, especially the last three. At Hawksbury they placed third out of seven teams and in Win- chester it was a very close second. At Russell's home meet, Russell doubled all the teams by a score of 180 pts. : The meets would not have been possible without the support of parents, | friends and interested members in the community. At this time I would like to thank Rolly Forgues for transportation Pee Wee Girls Sunday, August 10, 1980 will be remembered for a long time by the Russell Pee Wee girls softball team. Their playoffs were held in Greely and the girls emerged as champs. Eliminating Metcalfe by a score of 21-14 early in the morning the Russell team mar- ched right through the day undefeated. They played back- to-back games against Gloucester and Vernon winn- ing 12-3 and 12-6 respectively, proving that they are worthy Champions. R:S 90 Main St. N. SH ELL SERVICE Chesterville, Ont. Of course the team would not have progress- ed without the guidance and coaching of Lindley Stachon and Pat Ruest. The administrator, Greg Sherwood played a big part in organization. He ensured that the home meets ran smoothly and that we were invited to most away meets. Congratulations to the team and the administration.
