Dang nab it! It sure is tough to get my brilliant opinions into the Castor. First they tell me they want me to write, then they ain't so sure, then it's no, then yes again. Then they stop puttin? my pieces in the paper. They say they ain't got enough space, that they got too many writers better than me. So I say: "Throw out Beaver Bob and make room for me." And they say: 'No way, turkey." = says to them: "I'm writin' the dang things and you're goin' to put them in. My loyal reader is countin' on it." They says to me: "'Make us, dingdong."' So I lie a little and say that the + Press and the Record are fightin' for my services because they want to jack up their circulations. They panic and say: "O.K., Earl: Anythin' you want. You can write your own ticket." Well, maybe it weren't quite in them words but it went somethin' like that. Castor Ear Long-winded in Long-johns -- So away we go again. Lordy, you poor folks sure missed a lot of good columns I was thinkin' on over the last while. For instance, I had a mind to write all about the wart I had on the big toe of my left foot but it's gone now so there don't seem much point. And I had a notion to describe Bingo's at- tack of mange but it's all cured now. Bingo's my faithful dog, just in case some of you don't recollect. Speakin' on warts and mange, what did you all think of the way - the federal vote went? Weren't that just a shame the way the good ol' Tories got run out of office just when they were gettin' the hang of governin'. Awhile ago, I was sittin' beside the ol' woodstove in my longjohns ruminatin' on the election out- come. I had the trap door open so the heat would go up. That's the trap door in the ceilin' I'm talkin' about. : And I'm thinkin' that maybe if the Tories hadn't done so much flip-floppin' on the issues they might have got back in. They were about-facin' as often as I change my longjohns...about once every two weeks. 'Now, don't get me wrong. I'ma dyed-in-the-wool Tory, true Blue to. the quick. Always have been. 'smooth-talk a rattle-snake out of ~\ Why, you know them longjohns I keep bringin' up? They were red in color and givin' me one awful rash. I got the missus to dye them blue and dang if the rash didn't disappear. But I can't help thinkin' anyhow that the party is in bad shape and needs patchin' up. Joe Clark is a nice enough young lad; a little slow on the uptake, but nice enough. But he ain't no match for Trudeau who could bitin' him. The party needs a_ powerful figure to lead it into the next elec- tion and I've got just the fella. Me. Now, that thought may be a little hard to digest at first, but think on it. Give it a whirl...vote Castor Earl. Has-a nice ring to it, don't it? Vaccinations.for Horses A number of viral and bacterial infections cause fatal and economically important diseases in horses. Fortunately, good vac- cines are available for inducing immunity. Tetanus (lockjaw) bacteria (germs) are present in soil and manure. Horses with wounds or following surgery are most susceptible. Immunization against _ tetanus constitutes a very impor- tant form 'of protection since diseases of this nature are very ac- tue and offer little or no oppor- tunity of effective treatment. Tetanus toxoid (vaccines) stimulates a high level of immuni- ty to horses which are highly susceptible to tetanus. Encephalomyelitis is caused by a virus spread by mosquitoes. It produces sleeping sickness in horses. Any age of horse can be affected. Tetanus and encephalomyelitis vaccine should be given at three months of age, followed by a booster one month later. Annual boosters are recommended. : Rabies is a fatal viral disease of the nervous system of all warm- f Classified | PREGNANCY TEST In total confidence. Metcalfe Pharmacy Ltd. Eastern Ontario is a high risk area for rabies and it is recommended that horses be vaccinated initially at four Months of age then yearly. Equine' influenza and rhinopneumonitis are both upper respiratory tract infections caused by viruses, but rhinopneumonitis may also produce abortion in pregnant mares. Again, horses should be vaccinated early in life with two injections one month apart. Booster injections are recommended yearly. Influenza vaccinations may be _ repeated more often. Vaccination for rhinopneumonitis is not always .- practised unless it has been a'pro- blem on the farm particularly with horse breeding establishments. Spring is a good time of the year to perform vaccinations before horses come in contact with other animals through horse shows and country fairs. Even if 1980 is not -Russell's centennial, why not celebrate village heritage anyway? That's the attitude of Russell Postmaster Pierre Robinson and others who are tossing around the idea of celebrating heritage day, weekend, or whatever, possibly this summer. ' The idea is an offshoot of un- successful efforts to pinpoint the date of the village's christening as Russell. Although the efforts are ongoing, it seems that the date when the pioneer name of Dun- canville was dropped in favor of Russell may be lost forever, said Mr. Robinson who is co- ordinating the research. Information which surfaced a year ago suggesting that the name change was made in 1880 and that, therefore, this year was Russell's centennial, has not been substantiated. It has been deter-- mined that Russell was given police village status in 1898 but there is evidence that the name was Official before that. Mr. Robinson said that, while the village birthday might remain 445-2976. -- Lola Wood. Those who wish to enroll as riding students at Pinetree Stables -- I am preparing my spring schedules now. Although still just an idea, he envisaged a celebration consisting of among other things, exhibits of old pictures, antiques and ar- tifacts and demonstrations of pioneer arts and crafts by local residents in period costume. "'There's no end to what could be involved once people set their minds to it," he said. He hoped residents would ex- press their thoughts on the idea. One way would be through letters to the editor of the Castor Review, he suggested. Smashing. in Harvey smashing style of play has made him Open Champion. shorts and socks. Harvey Woods.
