Other officers: women's president, Naomi Eadie; first vice president, Ian MacGregor; second vice president, George James. George Young is again secretary. The financial statement showed federal grants totalling $9,330 and provincial grants, $3,080. An ad- ditional grant of $1,705 was received from Wintario. Prescott and Russell counties gave $3,000; Russell Lions Club, $2,713; Curl- ing Club, $1,166; and the Old Time Music Makers and Recrea- tion Association, $200 each. Fair admissions brought in $8,020. Prize money handed out came to $14,892. Malcolm MacGregor, represen- ting the Agriculture Canada "Showcase Herd", was guest speaker. He called on members of the audience for ideas on the future of the Russell Fair and a number of proposals were put for- ward. It was agreed that the fair was a showcase for farm produc- tion and rural arts. Joyce MacGregor suggested that a major function of the Agriculture Society should be to provide a voice for farmers who will soon be in a minority in the country. Charges Dropped A fraud charge levelled against a Russell man in connection with last fall's Project Alpha has been withdrawn. The provincial Crown Attorney's office dropped the charge against Dana Ford of R.R. 2 Russell. Barry McVey called for greater participation from the community on fair committees. © Ken Dugdale introduced a group of some twenty Swiss and Dutch farmers who have im- migrated to the area in the last two years and stated that these people are making a valuable contribu- tion to rural life and rapidly in- tegrating into the community. Marilyn Sullivan accepted thanks on behalf of the Ladies' Auxiliary. Ingrid Bemers of Vars, Russell County Dairy Princess, spoke in Dutch and English. Reeve Gaston Patenaude com- mented favourably on the turnout of young people. Cancer Society sets goal The Ontario Division of the Canadian Cancer Society has set a 1980- campaign goal of $9,700,000, with an objective in Rideau-Osgoode of $19,000. The money, to be raised by volunteers during the April cam- paign, will be used to support cancer_research in Canada and to finance programs in public educa- tion and service to cancer patients, including those in the area served by the Rideau-Osgoode unit. About 250 volunteers helped raise $17,000 for the campaign last - year, Mrs. Sterling said "Our ob- ~ jective has been raised to $19,000 for 1980 to help meet the Carleton District objective of $525,000."' "In order to achieve this, we need new canvassers in all areas of Rideau and Osgoode townships."' Mrs. Sterling can be reached at 692-4349. Jean Wilson's number is 821-2979,
