Many people participated in the Silver Jubilee Celebrations of the Russell Legion Ladies Auxiliary in September without realizing the humble beginnings of this group. On Nov. 4, 1954, 15 women were organized into the Ladies Auxiliary of Branch 372, Royal Canadian Legion. In those early years, the women met in an old renovated house, near the present Legion site, without indoor conve- niences. Undaunted, the Auxiliary held regular meetings, Euchre parties, an annual Armistice Bazaar and bake sales. All money raised was pledged towards a new hall. The names of those 15 original members are Martha Campbell, Nona Cherry, Pauline Cordell, Core Dey, Dorothy Ford, Bessie Honey, Alice Mavellus, Marion Millar, Margaret Miller, Yvette Marrow, Nellie Morrice, Beulah McNaughton, Hazel Morrow, Lois Rombough and Kay Sheahan. Their dreams were realized in 1970 when the present cement block Legion Hall was opened at the corner of 2nd Street and Ist Avenue. Assistance was given to the men at their weekly Bingos as well. All profits went towards paying off the mortgage on the new hall. During the past few years, the women have sponsored a Girl Guide group, bought sweaters for a girl's softball team, made a pledge to the new arena and sub- mitted names for educational bur- saries. This community involvement has been continued and was cer- tainly supported by the more than 250 people who attended the Silver Jubilee dinner on Sept. 29, honoring two charter members Mrs. Bessie Honey and Mrs. Yvette Marrow. Lately, membership in the Ladies Auxiliary has dropped.
