CASTOR REVIEW Jack McLaren are Sports Ramblings =! "PUNCH IS BACK"' In professional sports there is a saying that goes something like this "The team that fires you will eventually re-hire you."' This is becoming more prevalent as time goes on. The latest to go this route is George "Punch'"' Imlach who was recently rehired by the Toronto Maple Leafs. The original firing was by Stafford Smythe and the rehiring by the amiable Mr. Ballard. On the surface it looks like the Leaf organization has finally made a wise decision but only time will tell if Punch is up to the formidable task of turning Toronto's hockey fortunes around. There is little doubt that Imlach will be the boss for player selection and you can be assured that costly player trades that have taken place in recent years will grind to a stop. Even though he is a little older and has slowed down a step or two since his last job in Toronto, his contribution to hockey in the big city in the next few years should once again make Toronto a serious contender, something they were not going to achieve under the previous management. RUSSELL LIONS FASTBALL TOURNAMENT Just a short note regarding the Lions Fastball Tournament which will be taking place as you are reading your Review on the weekend of July 13-15. This is their 16th Annual Fastball Tournament and it has a healthy $3,200 in prize money. There will be a senior and an intermediate division. It will run all day Saturday and Sunday. For first class fastball be sure and turn up at the Lions Ball park -- refreshments and a chicken barbecue are also available on both days. Russell bantams B champs In their first tournament of the season the Russell Bantam softball team, coached by Don Empey, emerged as "B"' champ- ions of the Orleans Tournament. After losing their first game, they went on to win the next two to capture the consolation round. With Paul Cochrane and Todd McLaren sharing pitching duties in their second game _ they slammed Stittsville 22-1. In the final game it took eight innings for Russell to edge Greely 4-3. In the bottom of the eighth with the score tied 3-3 Greely pitcher Marc Brind'amour was attempt- ing an intentional walk to lead-off batter Todd McLaren. The third pitch got a bit too close to the plate and Todd ended the game with a home run. He also pitched the victory and was awarded the MVP medallion in the final two games. Any fears have since vanished with the team having won all 12 games played to date. This along with eight wins and no losses in Tournament play gives them the enviable record of 20 wins against no losses. The blending of younger players with a few veterans has_ worked extremely well and coach Jim Gamble's smooth handling of the team has played a major role in their success. In 20 games, only 18 runs have been scored against them and anytime the opposition does make contact, young hurler Greg McLaren gets excellent defensive support from other members of the team. Russell A's tourney champs It has been a few years since Russell Fastball teams have been walking off with top honors at area tournaments. With the rebirth of the Russell A's (Johnston Holdings) they are once again at the top of the heap and have achieved this goal in first class style. In their first tournament of the season held at Osgoode in mid-June, the A's were victors in all four games played winning the top prize of $200. The final game proved to be a pitcher's duel between Paul Nooyen of the Marvelville A's and Greg McLaren of Russell. Greg managed to hold Marvel- ville (including Moe and Larry Robinson) scoreless until the final inning to pick up a 2-1 win. In the tournament he had 53 strike-outs in 28 innings and was awarded with the best pitcher and MVP trophies. One week later the A's were back at it again, this time at the Gloucester sponsored tourna- ment at Leitrim. After breezing by Dan Wolfe's and Carlsbad in the first two games, the third proved to be a thriller with Russell beating Ramsayville 1-0. The final game was a re-run of the previous week with Russell once again defeating Marvelville (minus Larry) 5-0 on a one-hitter by Greg McLaren. Top prize money of $250 was presented to coach Jim Gamble while Greg McLaren was selected as the Tournament's best pitcher re- cording 52 strikeouts in 27 innings. My name is Paul Wylie and on the 18th of June I was hired by your Recreation Association as your new Recreation Facilities Man- ager. I look forward to working with you in preparing Recreation programs to suit all needs within the community. As must be realized, the present task ahead is to prepare the arena for the coming season. As you will see from the notes following, a number of activities are planned for the summer months. I'd like to draw your attention to the coming meeting of July 17 and extend a welcome invitation to all who wish to see more programs for the children and youth of Russell. For those who wish to discuss future programs, or programs for adults please do not hesitate to call me at 445-2050 and I will do my best to help. PROGRAMS 1. Young Canada Works 1979: Fitness and Nature Trail The Russell R.A. in co-opera- tion with Russell Township have applied for and received a grant for the preparation of a Fitness Trail. Three Russell students, Brian Stewart, Mike Edmundson and Alex Hayward have been hired and commenced trail prepara- tion Tuesday, July 3. This trail will serve all who wish to use it upon its completion. The grant program will extend to August 27 and it is our hope that by this date the area will be cleared, and Fitness Stations constructed. Although we have received a grant for this program we do require from local residents donations in the form of logs for constructing the fitness stations. The majority of the Young Canada Works Grant applies solely to salaries and therefore any donations would certainly be appreciated. Please call Paul Wylie at 445-2050 for more information. 2. Roller Skating The Roller Skating Program has been in operation for a number of weeks and has been quite successful. We operate from 6 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday even- ings for those who wish to take part. Please drop in at the arena and try your luck with the program. 3.
