Page8 Friday, June 8 Backtrack FELTON SCHOOL DAYS Felton Public School, one of the last of the classic white-washed, one-room school houses to operate in the Russell area, stood about four miles south of Russell Village on the road to Morewood. The school was built in 1845 and was closed in 1965 -- 120 years later. It no longer stands. In fact, there is nothing left of the original Felton, which was a small community consisting of a cheese factory, store and post office. Now there are some new houses and a street named after the old settlement. Below is a shot of one of the last groups of boys and girls to attend Felton School. Has fencing got you on the line, has cleaning the barn got you backed against the wall? This could be a _ job for Agricrew, the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food's summer program to provide farmers with experienced help at reasonable rates. Agricrew offers the service of crews composed of a foreman and four other workers who will assist farmers and agricultural societies with general duties. Crews are hired toa maximum of five days at a fee of $90 to cover part of the payroll. At the termination of a particular job, the employer. is reimbursed $15-a-day over the period he hired Agricrew. Those interested need only contact local Agricrew coordina- tor Denys Legault, 673-5115, at Plantagenet, who'll pay a visit at no obligation. CASTOR REVIEW Russell Registry -- Addition promised again A construction start on the long-discussed Russell Registry office addition is expected in early July, registrar Wendell Stanley has been advised. The Ministry of Government Services has also informed Mr. Stanley that the $266,000 project should be completed early in 1980. Previously, a spring start on the one-storey extension had been announced. Nothing materialized. But the ministry has now advertized for tenders. They're to be opened in Toronto June 14. Prescott-Russell MLA J. Albert Belanger told the Castor Review he would press the ministry to get moving with construction as soon as a contract has been awarded. Mr. Stanley is both excited and nervous when he contemplates the project which will double the space now available to the office's five employees. He's excited, because the addition will provide much needed space. But he's nervous because of the way work will interfere with the day-to-day routine. "'We'll have a heck of a time to say the least," he said. ""Summer is our busiest time. Everybody's buying houses."' The extension will be put in place first. The office staff will move into the new part while the existing, historical section is renovated. Council decided to hold off on the proposal, presented by the Metcalfe Anglican Church, until the Regional Municipality of Ottawa-Carleton has decided on a street numbering plan for the entire region, the reeve said. In addition, council feels that it would be better to number all properties in the township in one undertaking rather than intro- ducing numbering in Metcalfe alone, he explained. "It's not that we don't appreci- ate the Anglican Church coming to us, but the only real way to go is to number all properties, especially for fire department purposes."' Mr. Bouwers said that the only numbering done in the township to date is at Osgoode Village where a partial service was provided by a community group. E. A.
