CASTOR REVIEW It's enough to make a man turn to dring. Every time your provincial government needs more money, she slaps another tax on hootch. The prices of beer and likker have just been hiked up consid- erable and look at wine. Lookin' at it is about all anyone can afford to do anymore the way the price has shot up. If the provincial boys need more money, why do they have to get it from the necessities of life like booze, and tobacco? Why not tax somethin' less important like food or clothes? Don't get me wrong, mind. It's not that I'm a drinker myself. No sirree. I'm a teatotaller from way back who thinks the fella that invented likker was doin' the work of the devil. There are others around who enjoy a good snort now and again -- more now than again -- and I won't point the finger at no one except to mention that one of them writes a column for the Castor and thinks he's better at it than me. He's real hoity-toity and fancies himself the star attraction of this paper. How could anyone with a name like Beaver Bob put on fancy airs? Give me a good Christian name ee Castor Earl any time. Like I was sayin', likker has never crossed these lips. Except for medicinal purposes, of course. A fella has to get some comfort from his ailments some how. I take the odd swallow for my smoker's cough, about once a day or so, usually early in the mornin' when I wake up I keep a bottle under the bed in the thunder jug which we don't need anymore since we got the indoor . plumbin'. I usually try to take that first pull of the day without the missus seein' me because she don't always believe I drink for my health and she accuses me of likin' the stuff. That woman can be so distrustful. Then after breakfast I go out to the barn to poke around and usually my gout starts to act up. As luck would have it, I keep a bottle tucked away out there just in case so I take another stiff belt. Before lunch, my rheumatis starts painin' me. I go to the bottle I keep in the broom closet and take a shot. Then after lunch my arthritis flares up, and before supper it's the croup, and after supper it's my trick knee that starts naggin' me. Castor Earl Dizzyin' medicine tax I wouldn't drink before I go to bed except for this problem I have with dizziness at the end of each day. I can't figure out for the life of me what causes it. All I know is that the more I try to ease the pain, the worse it gets. A fella just can't win. Then theré's my speech im- pedement. I find that I start to slur my words towards the end of the day so I take a nip for that. And I have a problem with my balance and start bumpin' into things and trippin' over Butch the cat and Bingo my dog if they happen to be lyin' in the livin' room watchin' TV. All in all, I'm in pretty bad shape and rely on my medicine to keep me goin'. I keep bottles handy all over the house because a man never knows when he's goin' to take a weak spell. But I never touch the stuff more than six or seven times a day and only a few slugs at at time. Ain't it just like the gov- ernment to put up the tax on a man's medicine, the one thing he needs to keep goin'. Anyhow, I got to run now. I. feel a touch of writer's cramp comin' on and I'm goin' to see if I can find a little somethin' to cure Friday, June8 Page7 Block parents still wanted By Suzanne Schroeter The Russell "Block Parent' scheme is now under way, and you should soon be seeing the red "Block Parent" signs in windows in Russell. Please tell your child- ren and teenagers that houses with these signs are "safe"' houses to go to if they are in trouble of any sort. We would like to thank the Russell Lions for their generous monetary support which has covered the cost of such things as printing forms and buying the "Block Parent"' signs. Without such support this scheme would not have been possible. To date, we have had forty-five applications from people who hope to become "Block Parents" -- we need many more to make this scheme really work. If you are interested please call 445-2817 or 445-5478 for further details. Russell is growing fast, and newcomers don't always know their neighbours.
