Page10 Friday, June8 Meditoria By Rev. J. Paul Happy Birthday Church. Did you know that Sunday, June 3, 1979, the Church of Jesus Christ was approximately 1,945 years old. Nearly two milleniums ago, a small band of disciples were gathered together awaiting the promised visitation of God's Spirit. Then suddenly on the day of Pentecost the windows of heaven opened and endued each believer with divine power. Unstable Simeon Peter became Peter the rock, doubting Thomas became Thomas the faithful and that motly fearful group were welded into the Church of Jesus Christ which 'turned the world upside-down', or more appropriately 'turned the world right side up'. Many of her birthdays have come and gone without fanfare or applause. Moreover, one can say that most have been graced by persecution or passive indifference. In the 1960's the Church was disowned by many Canadians. It seemed as though the television was more popular than Jesus or the Bible. However, since those carefree years worldwide sorrows have dethroned man's self-confidence. Thousands have come to realize that a personal faith in Jesus Christ and a committment to His Church is not a sign of weakness or intellectual immaturity. One of the greatest and most exciting challenges of life is this challenge to live as a visible member of Christ' Church. The question before us is how can one become a member of the Church? Because the Church is not a social club we cannot sign on as interested persons and attend festive days. Because the Church is not a self-serve department store we cannot hope to gain entry by Baptism, Confirmation or any other holy act. But because the Church is a spiritual union with Christ one can only enter by a new birth. John the Apostle gives us the simple answer in John 1:12; "'But as many as received Him, to them He gave the power to become children of God, even to those who believe on His name."' Cancer campaign success The Russell Branch of the Canadian Cancer Society reach- ed its objective in this year's compaign for funds. The goal was $2,000.00, and the amount collect- ed $2,011.55, an increase of $574.59 over last year. Eric King, the Branch Presi- dent, expressed his appreciation of the generosity of local resi- dents, and also the contribution of the many volunteer canvassers who responded to the call for assistance. Mr. King said, "Mrs. Diny Achtereekte, the campaign co-ordinator, is' worthy of parti- cular praise for her efforts in this year's compaign."' Couples Club The May meeting of the Couples Club of. the United Church was held at the home of Wilmer Hamilton. President R. W. Gamble presided. Lunch was served. Baptists take name from Castor Valley By Rev. James Paul The Kenmore Baptist Church and the Russell Baptist Church merged Sunday, May 6, and have named the new congregation The Castor Valley Baptist Church. There is a rich history behind this new church. In January, 1875, the Kenmore Baptist Church was organized with a membership of 23. In February, 1894, the Russell Mission was opened as an outreach of the mother church. By 1910, the Kenmore Church had moved into a new brick building and the Russell mission had purchased the old Anglican Church in Russell and moved it to its present site. It was not until 1952 that the Russell Mission was officially recognized as an independent church. The new Castor Valley Baptist Church is in line with much of the not so distant past.
