CASTOR REVIEW Back Row: Ron Conway(Manager), Graham, Dave Cross, Keith McRoberts, Terry O'Neill, Lloyd Fawcett, Bob Woods, Billy Moran, Russell Raiders Barry Steve Morris. Front Row, Randy Blondin, Danny Chamberlain, Loyal Hughes, Doug Hay, Wayne Hughes, Richard Hamelin (Trainer), Kenny Quaile. Absent, Wray King. Raiders in first place The Russell Raiders are enjoy- ing their best start since joining the South Carleton Hockey Lea- gue and now find themselves leading the pack. With new talent added and the veterans playing exceptionally well, management feels that the team will remain a real contender this season. The addition of Randy Blondin has added punch to their scoring attack and with the outstanding goaltending provided by _ ex- Embrun Panther Wayne Hughes, the team has added balance in both directions. The acquisition of Wayne has also had a steadying effect on the play of the defencemen. The league as a whole is much stronger with the addition of several ex-Panther players. Competition for the top spot will undoubtedly get tougher but provided that the Riaders continue their solid performan- ces, they should be able to stay near the top. A great deal of time and effort went into the making of these schedules and a sincere vote of thanks is extended to Ron Laframboise, who was solely responsible for the produc- tion of two sets involving 42 teams in two tiers. Because of these schedules, certain normal ice times had to, be altered and we would like to commend for their co-operation conveners who were required to make adjustments in their sched- ules and hope that parents affected will understand that changes were kept to a minimum and only done to accommodate the league. New, and we hope permanent, ice times for 1978-79 will have been posted by the time this Newsletter is published. If this reaches you in time, don't forget our SKATE-A-THON on Saturday, November 18, from 7:00 - 9:00p.m. Get your pledge sheets and get in the "swim". Also remember our pre-Christ- mas Bingo slated for 8:00 p.m.. December 11. Minor Hockey will also be deeply involved in the RA-Lions Winter Carnival to be held in February. We will be conducting the Carnival Raffle, Minor Hoc- key Showdown, 1979 and a series of scheduled and_ exhibition games. In addition, we hope to arrange Novice games and Novice-Parents spectaculars on ice. In closing, may we again thank all those who have so unselfishly given of their time and money to make our fund raising projects a success and ask once again for their and others' continuing support, for, remember, "as our community endeavours grow and prosper, so do the characters of our young people'. Friday, November 17,1978 Page5 Jack McLaren Sports Ramblings THE GOLDEN JET RETIRES The recent retirement of the '"'Golden Jet" Bobby Hull has marked the end of an "era" in the hockey world. For those of us who can remember back to the late 50's when the NHL was comprised of only six teams and the rivalry was much more intense than it is to-day, the arrival on the hockey scene of two rookies, Frank Mahavolich and Bobby Hull opened a new chapter in the life of the NHL. Mahavolich went on to win the top rookie award that first year but from then on he always followed in the shadow of the brilliant and flamboyant Hull. Breaking into the NHL with the Chicago Black Hawks, Hull is probably best remembered for pioneering the slap-shot and while many to-day remain critical of its over-use, the fact is that it has been the most exciting innovation in the game in the last twenty years. Once over centre ice he was capable of scoring from anywhere in the opposition's territory against the best of goalies. He was the main attraction at home and away games and reportedly would remain late after each game for the benefit of hundreds of autograph seekers. He got much from the game but certainly no more than he put back into it. His dedication to the NHL ended in 1972 when he moved to the WHA to give it the credibility it needed to get started. He worked tirelessly at promoting the new league on and off the ice while toiling for the Winnipeg Jets. The hockey world is much poorer by his sudden retirement but he realized that the time had come when he could no longer contribute 100 per cent and playing under such conditions was not his style. An exciting player and a true gentleman -- he can never be duplicated although some will attempt to imitate him. The Jets President said it all when announcing his retirement '"'There will never be anyone else like him in the hockey business'? -- he is so right. MINOR HOCKEY Just a reminder that every Tuesday from 6-11 p.m., is minor hockey night in Russell. League play is now underway and what better way to spend an evening than at the Dr. Kinnaird Arena. It is a great place for people to meet and the Centre has certainly become the hub for community gatherings of all sorts.
