Credit for this unique opport- unity to research our local architectural heritage must go to the ladies of the Russell Village Women's Institute who, years ago, began writing the Tweedsmuir History. Mrs. Hom- er McKeown began the onerous task of compiling historical data and since 1973, Ina Kincaid has taken over the curatorship of the books (See "Thumbnail History, Castor Review, Oct., 1977). These impressive books are available at the Russell Public Library. The November meeting of the W. I. featured a preview of the Ne Scrapbook. By Suzanne Schroeter Spotlight on Heritage NCC project and a slide present- ation by guest speaker Rolf Latte, chief of the NCC heritage section. Mr. Latte displayed a map of the portion of Russell Township within the national Capital area indicating every building and its corresponding index number. Accompanying the map is a typed register of the buildings, listing index number, owner (if known), location and type of structure (church, house, cemet- ary, etc.). By the end of the 1978 fiscal year, Mr. Lattie indicated that all of the township's heritage buildings will have been photographed. Next year the project is to continue, focusing on further documentat- ion and dating. What is a heritage building? The Mill Street heritage home of Dick and Shirley Sherwood ~ Mr. Lattie quickly pointed out that a heritage building is not necessarily an antique (100 years old) but must combine historical authenticity, typical construction, of the period, and must be in good condition. The purpose of the NCC project is to preserve our heritage buildings for future generations. Copies of the NCC map and register are available from Mrs. Kincaid at the Library. I predict many local citizen groups, newcomers, churches, and scho- ols will show a great deal of interest in this survey of Russell, Embrun, and rural heritage structures. CASTOR REVIEW Piano Recital The twenty-eighth annual piano recital by the pupils of Mrs. Jack Twiname was held on Nov. 4 in the United Church. An enthusias- tic audience supported the boys and girls as each performed his or her pieces. The program consisted of solos, duets, trios, and quartettes on two pianos. Miss Donna Arbuthnot gave an address thanking Mrs. Twiname for her efforts on their behalf and Claudette Lauzon and Junior Hamelin made a presentation of a very beautiful arrangement of flowers. Home and School Association An active Home and School Association has been launched in Russell led by a Formation Committee of local parents. The aims of this new group include fostering greater cooper- ation between parents and teac- hers; promoting and understand- ing of the school and its work and to integrate with other child oriented organizations. A very successful meeting was held Oct. 19. Corporal Kennedy of the RCMP Drug Squad gave a presentation on Drug education in Schools. Meetings of the Russell Home and School Association take place on the second Thursday of each month at 7:30 p.m. The Formation Committee is anxious to gain support from all Russell parents.
