Page 8 Tuesday, June 6, 1978 CASTOR REVIEW Fire Brigade News The members of the Russell Volunteer Fire Dept. are pleased to announce the winner of their 50-50 draw as Jim Franklin of Gilmor St. in Ottawa. Jim received $242.00 when his lucky ticket was drawn by the Fire Chief, Jim Eadie, on May 2. The department would like to thank all those who purchased tickets. As mentioned in the previous Castor Review, the department will be making available smoke detectors and household fire extinguishers at discounted prices. Additional information, including prices, can be found in an advertisement in this edition of the Review. These life saving devices can also be seen at an open house at the fire hall, Sunday, June 11, from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. The general public is invited to attend and view the modern fire fighting equipment used by the department. "Georgie" Gamble doesn't re- member much about going to Sunday school when she was a young girl; only the red desks and chairs. It was as a teenager that the big transition occured. Her Sunday school teacher asked "Georgie" to supply a class for her, that is to take the class in her absence. Well, the ploy worked. Soon after that '"'Georgie" became a permanent Sunday school teach- er. When she began teaching she had 22 pre-school children. "Georgie" has an amazing knack for communicating with people. That coupled with the love of God makes the perfect recipe for a harmonious life. "J have never felt an age barrier between myself and younger people or between my- self and older people and I truly believe this is a gift from God." Mrs. Gamble has accomplished many things in her lifetime. As a young woman she was a member of the Young Peoples' Union. Through that organization she received her honorary diploma in leadership training. She then became a member of _ the Women's Missionary Society which later amalgamated with the Women's Association to form the United Church Women's organization, a group which still exists. She served as president of the UCW and is still on the executive. In 1959, "Georgie"' received her lay certificate as a lay preacher in the United Church of Canada. She has been chosen 4 times as a commissioner to the general council of the United Church, the only woman from the Russell branch to serve in that capacity. Mrs. Gamble has participated in several camps. Farthest Out non-denominational religious re- treat where people can gather and profess their continuous love for God. Out of these camps came de- lightful hymns that Georgina's class sings every Sunday. "You know how kids some- times dilly-dally along to Sunday school? Well now they don't be late because they don't want to miss the singing and they've been singing these songs for years now in my Sunday school class." "Georgie'"' has lived in Russell all her life and believes the village will continue to prosper. She admits there has been some dropping off in church attend- ance but says that people will realize its importance and it will be restored to its rightful position in society. When people realize they are each important individuals in the eyes of God and that God loves them deeply they will renounce Elder 'Georgie' -- Strength in God METCALFE PHARMACY LTD. "There is only one you. No one can replace you, no one. Isn't that wonderful? Just to think that God made you and no one can take your place is truly a miracle." To add to her impressive list of accolades Georgina was ordained an elder earlier in the year. She joins her husband Bob who was made an elder some 30 years ago. "Georgie"' is happiest when she can see God's presence in the world. "Seeing the joy of the Lord expressed through people. Now the joy of the Lord can be expressed through tears, through praise, even just quietly. But the joy of the Lord is my strength." 4-H Horse Club The Russell County 4-H Club held a regular meeting May 2 in Russell. The meeting included a western Riding clinic by Zane Thorpe, followed by a discussion and lecture on bits and bitting. The May 16 meeting took place at Centaur Riding School in Navan. The pack leader thought Carolyn's effort was so good that it should be shared with Castor Review readers. If I Were If I were a dog I would sit on a log; Oh, what fun it would be To play with Cindy Lee; But I can't be a dog. If I were a cat I wouldn't be at bat; And if I were a cat I would chase a rat; But I can't be a cat. If I were a tree Oh, what fun it would not be; To stand all day And not ever to play; I'm glad I can't be a tree. But if I were just me, Oh, what fan it would be; To laugh and sing, And play on a swing, I'm glad that I'm juse ME! Cochrane' Dairy Ltd. LOCALLY OWNED AND OPERATED BY CANADIANS 821-3887 445-2959
