CASTOR REVIEW Roger Warner: End of a business legacy. : é wai 3 E 2 0° ea ae Two Russell businesses change hands Russell residents welcomed two new businessmen to the village last month. The businesses that they are now operating aren't new but are two of Russell's oldest, going back to the turn of the century, and coincidentally were both owned by the same proprietor until his death a few years ago. Although the funeral and groc- ery businesses are figuratively worlds apart, Morgan Warner saw a need for both when he arrived in Russell as a partner with C. F. McArthur, of Ken- more, about 70 years ago. He ran the funeral home, grocery store and feed store - now a pizzeria - in Russell until his death. Roger Warner, who had work- ed with his uncle since 1946, sold the grocery store and last month, the funeral home, ending three- quarters of a century of Warner- owned business in Russell. But the Warner legacy will continue in name at least since the new owner, Daniel Lafleur, of Ottawa, has no plans to change the sign in front of the home on Castor Street. As for Roger, he's more solidly settled in Russell than ever having just bought the residence of John Dunlop, at 20 First Ave. He is to move in this month when Mr. Dunlop, a long-time Russell resident, leaves for parts west of Ottawa. Roger, a car salesman at Gregoire's in Embrun, was living in an apartment over the funeral - home with his wife Pat. They have two sons living in Ottawa, a third in Cochrane and a daughter in Kingston. He said he had been content to run the funeral home but that "a suitable buyer came along." The other former Warner business, the grocery store on Mill Street, has been operated for the past few years by Don Rogers who sold the Red and White dealership to Jack Tyo, of Embrun. Don, a little homesick, is negot- iating with a Toronto firm for a franchise that he hopes will take him, his wife Eva and kids Joy, 1 and Eric, 4 months, back to Newfoundland. But he's also finding time to enjoy a much-needed holiday which he said has Eva abut ready to kick hom out of the house. They are boarding temporarily with the Lorne Wade's. "T really enjoyed my stay in Russell, it was fantastic," Don said. "It gave me my start in business and I learned a great deal from it." The trio leaves July 12 with a group of 20 Ottawa-area scouts and venturers to spend four days in London, Eng., sightseeing before travelling by train to Blair Atholl Estate, Perthshire, Scotland, site of the Jamborette. The Russell threesome learned its place in the Ottawa delegation after being tested on scouting skills at headquarters. There were 40 applicants for the trip. Messirs Mackenzie, Butler, and Baillon applied for a Wintario grant to help pay transportation costs and have been doing odd jobs in the village to raise additional funds. Jamborette activities will include pioneering, orienteering, hiking, and socializing with scouts from several other countries. And the trip won't end there. Visiting scouts will enjoy the hospitality of Scottish scout homes until August 2 and some will go on to tour England for five days. Don Rogers, left, with buoyant new store owner Jack Tyo, centre, and son Jean-Paul.
