CASTOR REVIEW Jack McLaren Sports Ramblings JETS AWARD NIGHT Metcalfe Jets hockey team was honoured at a banquet held recently in the Metcalfe arena hall. Doug MacDonald was master of ceremonies for the evening and reported the Jets had come through a fairly successful season financially. He hoped that with the return of several of this year's young players the team could be a real contender next season. Players who received awards were: Frank Testa -- MVP and Offensive player of the year. Grey McLaren -- Best defensive player Daly McLaughlin -- Best defensive player. Randy Salmon -- Most improved player. Jeff Holmes -- Team leadership and coaches award. The players in return presented team plaques to coach Bob Gendron and manager Bev Skillen for their efforts and assistance during the season. MVP FOR THE MARVELVILLE KID Just about every town within a radius of 25 miles has from time to time laid claim to being the home of Montreal Canadiens star defenseman Larry Robinson. When Larry was recently awarded the Conn Smythe trophy as the MVP in the Stanley Cup playoffs even more area towns were in there pitching for some front page coverage. I was recently shown a photo of a Russell Bantam team back in the early 60's and guess who was standing in the back row - Montreal's number 19. I believe Larry did play most of his early minor hockey in Russell but Brian McFarlane, on coast to coast TV coverage, continually gives his home as Marvelville, Ont., Brian, as some of you may recall, played for the famous Inkerman Rockets - Inkerman a town which appears on very few maps of Ontario. For those of you who have never heard of Marvelville, it's down the road about 2 miles southwest of Russell. A few years ago it could boast a general store, a cheese factory, a church, a school and, for many years, had one of the finest outdoor rinks in this area. That's all gone but despite the claims made by other towns it sounds like the big de- fenseman still prefers to be known as the "Marvelville Kid" or the "Marvelville Marvel'. Congratulations Larry. SOUTH-CARLETON LEAGUE SOFTBALL Metcalfe and Embrun are the only area teams playing in this Intermediate league this year. Four professional football players, from the Athlete's In Action organization, challenged Osgoode Township High School, May 24 in a series of gruelling physical contests - volleyball, sit ups, tug of war and basketball. By means of a double assembly, the whole student body was able to cheer their three representatives on to amazing success. In the first assembly the Osgoode Panthers lost by a narrow margin, but in the second encounter the Panters defeated the Pro, 51 to 49. A few partisans did more than cheer in the tug of war event and the extra help offset the obvious imbalance in muscle-power. This was in a real sense, a challenge directed to each student and teacher in Osgoode High. During both assemblies, these professional athletes shared their testimonies of how they had come to meet Jesus Christ as The climax of the assemblies came when both Pat Bonnett and Wendell Deyo asked those present to consider On May 24, Metcalfe Public School held its annual track and field meet. The students were divided into three classes. In the A class, students aged 9 and 10 competed, in the B class students aged 11 and 12 were vying for top honors and, the C class saw students 13 years of age and over in the medal hunt.
