CASTOR REVIEW Cross-Country ski news A meeting of the Cross-Country Ski Club and the Bogie Benders Snowmobile Club was held on January 15 to discuss the dangers involved in the usage of snow- mobile trails by Ski Club mem- bers. Lack of funds, equipment, trail making and marking procedures have caused some difficulties but enthusiasm from skiers, a grant from the Ontario Department of Natural Resources and constant support from the Bogie Benders has made operations easier. An official of the National Capital Commission was gener- ous in offering assistance as to how the routing and trail making procedures should be carried out. A preliminary ski trail has been established south-east of the village and will be lengthened and improved as the necessary equipment is acquired. In order to qualify for a provincial government grant the Ski Club must have a substantial membership. All skiers are therefore invited to our next meeting at the Curling Rink on Wednesday, February 15, at 8 p.m. Family memberships of $5 for the season will be available at that time. A map of the trail will be on display and questions and sug- gestions will be welcomed. Those who cannot attend the meeting are asked to send their member- ship fee to Mr. Bruce Woolsey, 12 Eldon Street, Russell. It should be noted that as the Ski Club per se does not yet exist, we have accepted the invitation from the Bogie Benders to form our club within the framework of their's. This means that skiers will also have access to the Benders' clubhouse. The Russell Cross Country Ski Club is the first of its kind in the Castor area. Your support could make it the best. We plan to participate in the Russell Winter Carnival provided our member- ship is large enough, so be sure to join the Club now. R. J. D. Second place went to another squad from Shawville and third place went to Stittsville. Russell placed fourth with a rink skipped by Gord Saunders. Jack McLaren Sports Ramblings Minor Hockey Recently things have started to look up for the Russell Midgets. On January 21 they won the "B"' division championship at the Morrisburg tournament. After losing their first game they went on to defeat the Winchester "B"' team 5-2 and in the final game outscored North Gloucester 4-1 to emerge as the Consolation winner. A few days later they recorded their first victory of the season defeating a tough Metcalfe team 2-0. The good effort put forth since the start of the season is finally showing results. The Atom team continues to perform well and is staying near the top of their division. Meanwhile the PeeWees, Bantams and Juveniles are not having quite as much success and are struggling to stay out of the cellar in their division. Midget Tournament The AA level midget tournament scheduled for February 24-26 as part of Carnival Week should provide some of the best hockey that has taken place at the arena this season. There will be a total of 12 teams participating in the round-robin series. Teams confirmed include Brockville Braves, Massena, Nepean Raiders, Gloucester 'Rangers, Kingston Canadians and last years tournament champs the Ottawa West Golden Knights. It is also hoped that the Wrigley finalist East Ottawa Voyageurs will be able to attend but this has not yet been confirmed. Junior B Since the beginning of the year the Metcalfe Jets have been struggling to stay in the win column with any degree of consistency. I guess achieving consistency is the most difficult thing for any Junior B team. There is also one other gentleman involved in the game who appears to have problems with consistency and that is the referee. In a recent game with the first place Vanier 72's the Jets emerged the winner in what I believe was one of their best efforts to date. It was a game in which the refereeing, while not perfect, was at least respectable. In many hockey games the product provided will only be as good as the refereeing. Good officiating usually means a good, fast, clean game. There are 3 or 4 good officials working Junior B at the present time. There are however several whose efforts and talents leave a lot to be desired. Now I realize it is easy to criticize league officials and some will say could I do any better? I admit I can't but I do wish that some who have donned the red armbands, for financial gains, would be as honest as I and remain a spectator. But then again I'm not convinced that O.D.H.A. league executors want top notch officiation. Some of their disciplinary action taken or not taken recently, appears to condone rough-house tactics. Northeast division standings after losses to Vanier and Rockland. On Friday, January 27 the Jets were hammered 12-2 by first place Vanier 72's. The following Sunday, Metcalfe tied Rockland 6-6. In what may have been the most entertaining game this season the Jets edged Vanier 3-2 on January 31. Three nights later the hapless Rockland Nat- ionals skated to a 9-5 victory over the Jets.
