CASTOR REVIEW 0.T.H.S. Sports Beat Inclement weather on the last few days before the Christmas break forced the postponement of two events: The Gong Show which was to be _ held on December 22 was cancelled because auditions couldn't be held because of the snow storm; it also meant that the dance featuring Choker had to be snowed under. It is not known whether the dance will be re-scheduled to a later date. In sports action, the Junior Boy's Basketball team are win- less in their first four starts. They lost 80-30 to St. Pius, 96-36 and 81-27 to Gloucester, and 60-53 to Colonel By. Because of their improved performance against By, the boys have knocked down their points against from 85 to 79 on the average per game. They score an average of at least 37 points a game. Good luck throughout the rest of the season!!! The boy's curling team didn't win many of their games in the Pepsi-Cola Playdowns so they didn't win any trophies. The girls did a lot better in reaching the semi-finals but missed the championship by losing 10-9. The boys beat the girls in their annual game over at the Metcalfe Curling Club. The score was a resounding 9-3 score. The girls were never really in the contest after the second end. The girls stole two in the first but the boys came back in the second with four. In the third, the boys got two more as well as in the fourth. We only managed one in the fifth. The girls managed one in the sixth but it was too little too late. Better luck next year! Thom Racine and myself were put into action because two of the regulars weren't there. The Junior and Senior Girl's volleyball teams are _ busily preparing for the upcoming season. There was a tournament at Merivale High School on January the eighth and I'll try to have the results next time around. The seniors downed the juniors in three games straight in an exhibition match. In the first game, the juniors had the seniors 6-0 before falling apart and when it was over, the seniors had won by a score of 15-11. They also won the second and third games by a scores of 15-1 and 15-7. Before I leave, I would like to take this time to say hello to James Prevost who is at Seneca College, just North of Toronto. See you next month!!!! Garey "Toot" Ris Friday, January 13, 1978 Page 5 PORTS iat 'te Winchester tournament medal winners: Bottom left, S. O'Reilly. Bottom right, Geoff Thompson. Middle, S. Jack Mclaren Sports Ramblings CDMHL TOURNAMENT Five teams from Russell competed in the second annual Carleton-Dundas Minor Hockey League Tournament played at Winchester over the Christmas holidays. After a 5-1 loss to an entry from Canterbury the Atom team trounced Greely 14-1 and then lost a squeaker to Chesterville in the B division final. The Pee-Wee team lost to Greely 3-2 in the B division semi-finals. The Bantam team came up empty losing both of their games. Winchester outclassed them in the first contest 6-1 while Metcalfe downed them 5-1 in the second. The Midget squad played extremely well despite losing both of their games. They were edged by Greely 3-2 in the first match and battled Kemptville to a scoreless tie at the end of regulation time. After just 35 seconds of overtime, with both goalies removed, Kemptville scored to post the victory. The Juveniles proved to be more fortunate as they defeated Edwardsburg to win the B_ Division championship. Tournament medal winners were Geoff Corry, Billy Flynn, Geoff Thompson, Shawn O'Reilly, Steve Bourguignon and Jim Cochrane. MIDGET A TOURNAMENT Check off February 24, 25, 26, on your calendar. That's when some of the finest Midget teams in eastern Ontario will be competing for top honours in a tournament at the Russell Arena. This tournament is being held as a part of carnival week activities. JUNIOR HOCKEY The Russell Minor Hockey system has not produced many players for Junior competition but this years a few boys are playing for teams other than Russell and it is always interesting to follow their progress. Mike Fleming, a student with the Nepean Raiders Bantam and Midget A teams the past three years, was drafted this past summer by the Toronto Marlboros of the O.H.A. Mike attended the Marlies training camp in early September but, with few openings available on the team, returned to Ottawa to join the Nepean Raiders of the Central Junior A league. His consistent good play and added experience undoubtedly earn him another try at cracking the Marlies lineup this fall. Greg McLaren spent two seasons with the Nepean Raiders Bantam A team and is currently playing with Metcalfe Jets Junior B team. He hopes to return to a Midget A team in the National Capital Minor Hockey Association next season. Kenny and Brad Sullivan are members of the Winchester Hawks Junior B team where Brad is one of the team's top goal-getters. Brad is a veteran of Junior competition while brother Kenny, a graduate of both Metcalfe and Russell organizations, is a rookie. Kevin Cochrane, a product of the Nepean Raiders Midget A team is currently playing for the South Ottawa Canadians Junior B team. Barry Hicks began the season with the Rockland Nationals Junior B team and is now with the Winchester Hawks. Barry is a graduate of the Russell and Embrun hockey organizations. Raiders moving up The Russell Raiders have climbed into fourth place three points ahead of Osgoode and four points back of Kars Aces. The Raiders doubled N.D.H.Q. 8-4 on January 6.
