CANADA DAY -- (Continued from Page 1) entails a recognition that what is currently going on in Northern Ireland is criminally stupid and unnecessary. The Canadian Lebanese must be appalled at what is happening in Beirut. Even pequiste French Canad- ians who are today denying this purely Canadian root are ill at ease. In the community of Russell we must be ready to be effective and useful Canadians. This does not mean that Christians should become Moslems or white people should become black. It does mean that if francophones are feeling threatened then anglophones should go an extra mile to reinforce the use of French: that they should desist from throwing up their hands in derisiveness and helplessness every time someone suggests that a notice going to school children should be bilingual. It also. means that because anglophones and everyone else are all feeling threatened by the uncertainties of today's world, that francophones must not push quite so hard and so fast, or hold to old grievances too tenacious- ly. Perhaps the Generals Wolfe and Montcalm died of laughter on the Plains of Abraham having had a vision of the curious conumdrum called Canadian that they had jointly sired. Curious conumdrum it may be to be Canadian but if we are not that we are nothing else, just nothing. Baird McNeill METCALFE PHARMACY LTD.
