Russell Review Comment By Mark Van Dusen A community without a newspaper often lacks the vitality to support one. The Review is a_ clear indication that Russell is alive and well even if at times it seems to matter to residents only and nobody else. As far as the Review is concerned, «the village's main reason for being is its residents. This is hopefully reflected in the paper's sometimes-thin body. Let's face it, the Review cannot possible cover' the momentous political decisions taken daily outside the village but. which affect all of us. At best, it can comment on them periodically. With true humility, the Re- view must leave the '"'big stuff"' to' the larger dailies and weeklies. Its's. the local stuff that concerns' this paper: new- comers, bake sales, fairs, food specials, church services and opinions on aspects of village life. Local stuff may be, but not little stuff. These are the thitgs which are important to our village life and give it its vitality. With occasional contributions from all residents, the Review will continue to reflect this vitality. - O.F.A. News Release "Not enough attention is being paid to the role which food prices is playing in keeping down the cost of living", said Gordon Hill, President of the Ontario Federation of Agri- culture. Mr. Hill explained: "Food prices have decreased while the prices of all other major consumer items have increased. From September 1975 to Sept- ember 1976, housing (including utilities, furniture, appliances, etc.) increased 11.2 percent. Clothing increased 5.8 percent and transportation increased 10.1 percent. In the same period, food at home decreased 2 percent and total food decreased 0.5 percent." "If other prices had stayed the same as they were in September 1975, and only food at home had made its change of -2 percent, the Consumer Price Index would have dropped about 0.5 percent. Instead, it increased 6.5 per- cent"' said Mr. Hill. "Too much has been said lately about the supposed costs of supply management and marketing boards. These figures show clearly that food prices have not been increasing at an alarming rate and indeed have not been increasing at all. Marketing boards are _ not villains and they may even be heroes" concluded Mr. Hill.
