So we're still here! Those little green men didn't do us in after all. I suspect they landed, took a quick look, and figured it wasn't worth the bother. Hugh Latimer dropped in the other day with this picture of Marvelville Public School, around 1912. Know anybody in that crowd? Speaking of Hugh, he's now in the heating business -- oil burner service, installation, air conditioning etc. We wish you all the best, Hugh! Russell has its share of characters. Thieves hit the canteen at the ball park, and while ripping the place off, made themselves a pot of coffee. Oh, wow. by a.m. Russell R.A. Dance The '200 Club" of the R. A. will be making the last of 25 weekly draws and the final draw of $1,000.00. Music will be Virtronics Discotheque Services. Refreshments will be available. Tickets are being sold at $1.50 per person by all members of the R. A. Board or will be available at the door. The dance of course will be held upstairs at the Arena in the Community Centre, and music will fill the air constantly from 9:00 p.m. until 1:00 All this takes place on Saturday, the 26th of June, so mark it on your calendar, get a group together and join in on the fun. 60% Tax Boost For Prescott, Russell HAWKESBURY (Special) -- The Prescott and _ Russell ratepayers face a 60 percent average increase in secondary and elementary public school taxes. The Prescott-Russell County board of education adopted Wednesday a budget of $13,189,856. Of this amount, $10,924,636 will go towards secondary schools and $2,265,520 for elementary schools. Russell Township faces the highest increase at 89.4 percent. The levy increases from $109,229 last year to $178,076 this year, and the mill rate to 38.61 from 20.39 in 1975. Town of Hawkesbury is next on the list. Its levy increases from $458,138 in 1975 to $750,304, up 85.6 percent. The town's mill rate has jumped from 21.65 to 40.19 per $1,000. Rockland's mill rate has leaped from 26.43 to 41.33. The new levy is $138,330 compared to $86,459 last year. The ratepayers of the 18 municipalities in the counties will have to come up with $2,300,241 or 22.53 percent of the board of education's revenue this year, compared to $1,432,658, or 16.60, last year. The board expects to spend $7,148,765 for instruction, $1,217,046 for repair and mainten- ance, $980,120 for student transportation and $236,669 for administration. Russell Lions Bike-A-Thon The Lions Bike-A-Thon, held on Sunday, June 6th was a success again this year with just under $2,750.00 pledged in support of 89 bikers. A total of 64 completed the 50 mile route. The Lions wish to thank all the bikers who participated, and the many people who helped make it a success. As we go to press, the prize list has not been completed, but we'll report further in our next publication. Again, thank you one and all for your cooperation. Horticultural Society says "Thank You" The Horticultural Society would like to thank the children of both schools in Russell. They gave an hour of their time every week trying to beautify our village in going out to pick up all the litter on our streets. The teachers were' very cooperative and gave a good example to all the children by helping as well. There were more than a hundred garbage bags picked up. We hope you noticed our work and lets try to keep our village clean all summer. Junior Directors Social Mrs. Helen Thompson and Mr. Robert Morrice were married at the Russell United Manse on Saturday evening, June 5th, 1976, with Rev. Leonard Woolfrey officiating. Russell Phair assist- ed the groom as best man. The bride was attended by Mrs. Edith Phair. The bride wore a street length blue dress with white accessories, a_ silver legion pendant, gift of the groom and red and white corsage of roses. The maid of honour wore a pink street length dress and wore a corsage of yellow and white carnations and white accesso- ries. A reception was held at the Legion Hall. Mr. and Mrs. Morrice left on a trip to the west coast. They will reside in Russell. Mrs. Catherine Hamilton of Russell celebrated her 90th birthday on June 5th. An enjoyable afternoon was spent by neighbors, friends and relatives at the Legion Hall. Rev. Leonard Woolfrey made a very appropriate address to Mrs. Hamilton. She thanked all the people in a wonderful way. Mr. Albert Belanger, M.P. presented her with a Provincial plaque. Mrs. Hamilton has two daughters Mary(Mrs. Osgoode James) of Edwards and Muriel (Mrs. Samuel Campanella) of New York, and three grandchildren. We are all sorry to hear that Mrs. Sarah Kinchen was taken to Winchester Hospital. She cele- brated her 97th birthday on May 28th. We all wish her a speedy recovery. Mr. William Loucks was taken to Winchester Hospital. We all wish Bill a speedy recovery. Mr. and Mrs. Clelland Hamil- ton of North Russell will hold an at-home on Sunday, July 4th from Notes 2:00 -- 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 -- 9:00 p.m., in honour of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Herbert James, who will celebrate their 60th Anniversary. Best Wishes. Mrs. Harry Williams _ of Kemptville spent a few days with the Misses Florence and Dorothy Marquette. We are pleased to report Mr. Edgar Loucks home from the hospital, we wish him continued progress. Miss Agnes MacLeod of Ottawa spent the weekend with the Misses Florence and Dorothy Marquette. Dr. and Mrs. Tom Lindsay and children of Manotick were the guests of Mrs. John Twiname Sunday. Mrs. John Twiname had dinner Monday evening with Mr. and Mrs. James McDonald and family of Ottawa. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Kasse- baum of Torrance (Los Angeles) California, have visited Rusell twice within some two weeks period. They visited their friends Mr. and Mrs. Robert W. Gamble, and Mrs H. A. Cherry; and left with the good message for the village, as they said, "Russell is a Friendly place to see, visit, enjoy and make friends therein. On their first visit they gave a film presentation of exceptional slides, Mr. Kassebaum being a professional at photography; on their last visit they appreciated the talent shown at the Horticultural night. Isn't it nice to be known as the Friendly Town. Don't forget you are a part of that Friendly place called Russell.
