Oldtimers Hockey By the time you hockey fans or should I say, followers of Oldtimer Hockey, read _ this article our hockey season will only be a faint pounding in Gerry O'Reilly's backbone. It was a long, fast, hardhitting season with plenty of near end-to-end rushes to keep the spectator on the edge of his seat. As Isit here pondering my next sentence, my mind returns to some of the highlights of the season. Following are some of the bright spots listed in numerical order. 1. There was the time 'Hughie', amazingly stickhandled his way through the lobby to the washroom. 2. There was one time when Chuck Norris had a shot on goal and I stopped it. 3. There was the time Keith Boothe shadowed Eddie Blais. He followed him on to the ice, and caught up to him again on his way back to the dressing room. 4. What about the night Gerry O'Reilly had the hat trick? Come to think of it I don't remember that night either. 5. Speaking of hat tricks, do you remember the night Chris Baas got his? He fell down once, he touched the puck once and he got the length of the ice once. 6. Remember the night Frank Brock played the whole game without getting a game miscon- duct. Yes, it has been a fine season. I think with a little bit of good luck in the draft and some half decent coaching we can ice four teams again next year. I know Lhad fun, didn't you? Barry Carscadden Minor Hockey The members of the Bantam Division of Russell Minor Hockey would like to take this opportun- ity to thank Bill Loucks for the transistor radio he donated during Carnival Week, to be given to the most valuable player on the Bantam Team for his play during the week of the Carnival. The winner, as picked by the coach, was Alex Hayward. Congratulations Alex and to you Bill Loucks, Thanks. It is nice to see the citizens of Russell take an interest in Minor Hockey. Russell Raiders As at press time the Raiders are in a 6 pt. series with Ottawa Mustangs. Russell and Ottawa are tied at 5 pts. Kars Aces are waiting to play the winners of this series. Hopefully Russell will be that Team. Pee Wees The Russell PeeWee's, under coach Brad Sullivan, finished the regular season play, Feb. 24, and lost to Metcalfe in the playoffs. We had fun and would like to thank Brad Sullivan, Chris Flemming, and Gerry O'Reilley for helping us through the year. And thank you to all the Russellites for their support. Kevin O'Reilley PeeWee Division Little Guys A successful season is drawing to a close for our little hockey enthusiasts. We had a good size group ranging in age from 5 to 8. It was slow going at the start, with many of the boys skating on their ankles, but they persisted and have progressed very well. The high point for our boys was their first official game on March 29th when they defeated Metcalfe Tykes 2-0, with a_ re-match Saturday, April 3rd in Metcalfe. Ron Adie and I would like to thank the many fathers who gave us their assistance and support throughout the season. Atom's The line-up went as follows: Chris Bass, goalie; Peter Latimer, forward "A"; Steve Gamble, forward; Steve Bour- guignon, goalie; Brian Graham, forward; Andrew Otto, forward "Cc"; James Hicks, defence; Bill Nyenkamp, forward; Marc Bail- lon, forward; Ken Carscadden, forward "A"; Don May, Forward Steve Bekkers, defence; Robert Clarke, forward; Paul Cochrane, defence; Scott Young, defence; Peter Flay, forward. Our team was winners this year in two respects of the game of hockey. First and most important was the fact that each player gave me his supreme effort in each game we played. Secondly, we had the least number of penalties levied against us than any team we played in or out of our league. We have been beaten by teams who had 150 boys to choose from to make a team. We never ceased to amaze other hockey teams, such as Alta Vista, as to our determination, and with only twelve players dressed all year. Can you imagine Russell having a population of twenty thousand? We would play any Atom hockey team in Canada. I am so proud of our team I would try it with our present team. You're a great team, fellows, and thank you for letting me coach. This definition was true of our players last October when we held our first practice. We feel that they have outgrown this definition by mastering some of the basic techniques required in playing hockey. Not participating in league play, we spent many practices drilling skating, passing, stick handling, and shooting. These at times can be boring, but we feel that these basics should be taught at an early age when children seem to be able to learn so quickly. We had our share of victories in winning several exhibition games played with nearby novice teams from other towns. Teams played were Embrun, Metcalfe, Chester- ville, Manotick, Greely, Alta Vista and Osgoode. We also participated in a Novice Tourn- ament at Osgoode and were eliminated in the final game by Richmond. We, as coaches have had fun this season and hope that the players have had fun as well. We have accumulated some memor- ies of some funny little incidents which happened during the season, that we are sure would fit well in the book "Kids Say The Darndest Things". The lengthy six month season has had its ups and downs for both coaches and players. If we yelled too loudly, we hope the players will forgive and forget, as we have when they didn't toe the line to our satisfaction. The parents of our players showed great support. Instead of sending their boys to the arena they accompanied them and showed a genuine interest in what we were trying to accomplish. To the players moving on to the Atom Division next year, Good Luck. We'll miss you. To the players remaining in the Novice Division, we wish them the best and hope they will continue to improve as they did this past season.
