Page6é Wednesday, March 24, 1976 Horticultural News We are nearing the time of year that we know spring is just around the corner. Are you planting a garden? The seed catalogue is here with all its beauty. In Ottawa today, the technique of plant breeding is really catching on. Plant Hybridizing is relatively simple and can be learned in a few minutes, according to A. R. Buckley of Agricultural Plant Research. In recent years, he says the largest number of ornamental plant varieties have resulted from the efforts of amateurs. Basically remember that plants must be closely related botanically. It is useless to try to cross a lily and a rose or, a geranium with a dahlia. Even some very closely related flowers will not produce seeds from a cross, such as varieties of hybrid roses or even gladiolus. Examining the parts of a Flower Before Starting: As work proceeds the art of selecting the right kind of parents and evaluating the hybrids produced will be more carefully studied. A perfect flower has four parts: the ovary at the base contains ovulas (underdeveloped seeds); the style is the stalk that connects the stigma with the ovary, the stigma has different shapes according to the flower); the anthers produce the pollen grains. Blooms like those of dahlias, mums, and zinnias are really clusters of perfect or imperfect flowers. The parts described above are so small they are difficult to emasculate (remove the anthers). Many fully double flowers like geraniums, double nasturtiums and double petunias have been doubled by stamens that have changed into petals resulting in little pollen being available. Mr. Buckley's hobby is breeding iris and gladiolus, which have large flowers that are easy to work with. CONT. NEXT ADDITION. JOIN OUR HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY. First, very few really strained themselves get- ting items to us. Second, the editor was working under a strong influence of Neo-Citran and was virtually stoned. We beg your indulgence.
