21. Ros 7 OR ¥ OF RUSSELL J, Twiname LOOKING BACK Did you know that the first cheese factory in Russell was situated on what is now the north west corner of the school grounds? The original owners were known as Petrie and McKeown, who later sold it to T. A. Carson. The factory was active until the late 1920's and quite often was visited by the students from the nearby school, especially in the afternoon recess when the curd was ready to be pressed into cheese. The advent cf the Canadian Milk Plant built on the farm of Mr. Wilton Gamble, sounded the death knell of many a cheese factory in the vicinity. When Messers Petrie and McKeown sold the cheese factory they operated a store for dry goods and groceries and also were joined by a man by the name of Mr. Latremouille in this operation. About the time the first cheese factory was built a thriving business known as the tannery was making headlines. It was situated between the properties of Mrs. E. Presley and Mr. Wm. Pratt and was owned by the Morris family. Miss Lorraine Morris, a descendant of the original owners continued to live for a long time in the house at the west end of Castor Street, long after the tannery disappeared. In order to prepare the hides of animals to produce leather, hemlock bark was used in the process. There must have been goodly stands of hemlock bush throughout the township to keep the operation active. Maybe this is one of the reasons that the hemlock tree is so scarce in our vicinity today. 2 CAN PLAY THIS GAME A farmer shopped around for a new car and became disgusted with the pricing system, what with all the talk about optionals and extras.
