RECOLLECTIONS OF THE HISTORY OF RUSSELL TOWNSHIP Shortky after the year 1800, two men set foot in the south-west connern of what is now Russell Township with the purpose of cklearing the Land and erecting a home. The two men were James Purvis and John McLaren. The name 'Purvis' has disappeared from our List of names, but there are many descendants with the McLaren name, who stilk enjoy Living within the township. After the war of 1812 many Loyal British subjects crossed the St. Lawnence River seeking new tracts of Land and many of them found their COCHRANE'S DAIRY LTD. LOCALLY QWNED AND OPERATED BY CANADIANS 237-18 x hi 445-2959 way to the banks of the Caston River. A group of these people settked in the anea where the concession road #3 crosses the county noad, approximately one miLe east of the praesent village of Russell. One name that was prevalent among the settlers was the name of 'Loucks'. Fon this neason the settLement was named 'Luxemburg'. (Mone to folkLow in future editions.) eee * * J.
