END OF FAMILY COMPACT Possibly the final blow to class rule in Canada--the Family Compact --was struck in 1838. when rebel forces from Upper New York State invaded Canada across the St. Law- rence River at Prescott, Ont. with an International Peace Celebra- tion at the historic Fort Town this July, convinced the powers of the day that the then colonial possession was fast approaching maturity and en- titled to the democratic form of government which a few years later came into being. Many people now would appreci- ate a steady job, but not this kind: The immigrant had finished his first month on a western farm. Immigrant -- I'm quitting, boss. You promised me a steady job. Farmer--Well. it is a steady job, isn't it? Immigrant--No, there's at least three hours in the middle of the night Leese or emt, His wife was reading aloud a newspaper account of a fashionable wedding. : "It says the bride and groom will spend the honeymoon motoring in different parts of the British Isles.' CHURCH GOING WAS ONCE COMPULSORY In gay and balmy Bermuda, life was once a sober business indeed during the reign of Cromwell. Stage plays, playing with dice, swearing and even the singing of merry songs were all prohibited. Swearing cost one shilling per oath, however mild. In those days Rermuda church- wardens "upright, honest and sober in their carriage, were instructed to look into the lives and conversations of the people and to search the worst and most suspected places with a view to forcing people to at- tend divine service." Today Bermuda is a land of liber- is em- Ken- ty where thousands of tourists, many of them arriving by "Lady" liners of the (Canadian National Steamships from Montreal, Halifax and Boston, make merry or live quietly, according to their inclina- tions. i : i Rev.
