8 The Castor Review May, 1982 Recreation Russell plans | Summertime festival That sage philosopher Casey Stengel once said: "Things ain't as good as they was in the old days. In fact, they never was." Well, the Russell Recreation Association is out to prove Casey wrong. The RA is planning and helping to organize a day of summer fun for the whole family -- like it was in the old days. The objective of the day is to involve as many Russellers and others as possible Playground program planned by Mary Donnelly Russell will have a playground program for children ages 2 1/2 to 12. Organizers hope to make this year's playground a beehive of ac- tivity including crafts, games and sports. The playground program will run from July 5 to August 10 at the Dr. Kinnaird Community Centre. - Activities for pre-schoolers will take place Monday to Thursday mornings from 9:30 to 11:30, while activities for school age children will take place Monday to Thursday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Friday mornings will be set aside for special outings. Grant funding from Ontario Ministry of Culture and Recrea- tion will help to pay the salaries of two leaders who will be hired from the community. A registration fee of $5.00 a week or $20.00 for the five weeks will be charged. Parents may opt out of the pro--- gram for the inconvenient weeks. All parents who may be in- terested in enrolling their children should contact Mary Donnelly 445-3232 or speak to one of the program's organizers Suzanne Schroeter, Valeries Hanson and Shirley Arnold. More details on the program itself will follow in the next Castor Review. ~ Biblioinfo par Lucille Legault Bibliotheque municipale d'Em- | brun. Heures d'ouverture: Mardi- jeudi: 19h. a 2lh. Starting off the day's activities will be a 10 km road race around and through the' village, with a 5 km route for run- ners 12 years old or younger and for anyone else who feels that 10 km is just a mite long. The exact route, starting time, entry fees and other important details will ap- pear in next month's Review. Then, to take care of all those appetites whetted by running or even watching the run, a pancake brunch will be served. Mmmm! Love those carbohydrates! But wait! There's more! Throughout the day will be tour- naments of several varieties: horseshoes, darts, pinball and family lob ball. With prizes too! Also, through the day will be games for the kids. What summer festival would be complete without a beergarden and bar-b-que? And then to cap things off, a dance which, if it can be arranged, will be outside as well. There's just one other thing to consider. All of this depends on volunteers, and that's where you come in. If you think the idea of a family summer festival is a good one and you would like to help by organiz- ing or assisting at one of the ac- tivities then please call either Peter .Romme at 443-5547 or Greg Rokosh at 445-2874. Some volunteers are already on board, but many more are needed and needed soon. But even if you can't help organize, please mark the: date on your summer calender, invite friends and family to "c'mon out to Russell", and have a ball! Russell R.A. appoints Mr. Jack Garden, assistant to Russell's former Recreation Director Paul Wylie, was selected recently to fill the new post as Russell's Recreation Facilities Manager. The position of Recrea- tion Director has been eliminated. According to Recreation Association Chairman Baird McNeil, maintenance and opera- tion of Russell's recreational facilities, principally the Dr. Kin- naird Community Centre - building, is the major responsibili- ty facing Mr. Garden and his staff. This means that responsibility for introduction and development of specific recreational programs _ is in the hands of the citizens of - Russell -- aided by the R.A. Com- mittee and the staff.
