8 The Castor Review, March, 1982 Figure skaters in Spring Revue by Charles Verge The Russell Figure Skating Club completed its ~1981-1982 . season by putting on a Spring Revue. This Ice Show was attend- ed by over 150 people and featured presentations by all members of the Club. The younger skaters were divid- ed into three groups: The Ducks on Parade, the Fuzzy Wuzzy Bears and the Pussycat Capers. Each of these groups was accom- panied by a soloist who performed a 1 1/2 minute routine. They were Megan Furuness, Kim Ambroise and Jackie Bodgen. A fourth soloist Tracy McVey preceeded the major presentation number which had as a theme: Star Wars. The Darth Vader's Imperial At- tack and The Space Girl's Star Wars were the two segments of this presentation and featured all the senior girls of the Club. Several other numbers completed our Ice Show. Gifts of flowers were provided to our professionals Renée Ladouceur and Jill Taillefer at the end of the event on behalf of both the Club and the senior skaters. Ramblings Metcalfe twirls on ice thrills audience By Jack McLaren At a time when financial restraint seems to be a _ very popular phrase, it was most en- joyable for me to attend a first- class function which I should think was put together almost en- tirely by. volunteers. It proved to me that volunteers are alive and well and in this par- ticular instance turned out a pro- duct which was very professional and yet retained enough of the unexpected to still rate as a top amateur show. The event was the annual ice skating show fashioned by the Metcalfe Figure Skating Club. The theme of 'this year's show was "A Tribute to Broad- way."' As usual it played to a capacity crowd -- about 500 people -- and when it was all over, only words of praise could be heard as spec- tators were making their way through the lobby homeward bound. The credit for preparing the young skaters who almost flawlessly twirled through numbers from Hello Dolly, Sound of Music, Annie Get Your Gun, Porgy and Bess and many more, must of course go to club Pro Marvelville in finals The Marvelville ladies ringette team once again finds itself in the finals of the Gloucester Ladies Ringette League. After winning the league championship two years ago, the team slumped a bit last season but appears ready to make a determined effort to regain the championship this season. They finished third in Division A which includes Hanimond, Cyr- ville and Blackburn Hamlet. After a series of round-robin playoffs they have advanced to meet the tough Hammond team in the final championship game. Broomball standings Team "Wk. T TP. Cara Spooner and-her assistant Dawn Williams. With only one night of ice time a week to work with such large numbers of skaters of all ages, it doesn't give much time to spend on_ individual skaters. ' Thed audience was also treated to performances by special guest skater Campbell Sinclair of the Minto Skating Club who thrilled viewers with his jumps and rhythmic skating ability. The young skater sure gives the im- pression he enjoys what he does best. The dedication of Club Presi- dent Carol Budarick and her ex- ecutive has been evident throughout the year. . While I believe that Carol receives considerable help like most organizations, the bulk of the work still falls on the head of the club. The many phone calls, meetings and surely the odd frustration made possible the ex- ceptional quality of the show. Everything from the props, ex- .tra lighting by Hugh Ferguson, music by Ron Isaac to the profes- sional touch added by the master of ceremonies Sharon Geagle made the evening most enjoyable. Last but surely not least, I can't even begin to imagine the number of hours that dedicated ladies put into making the beautiful costumes worn by every skater. The volunteer system is alive and well, and hats off to president Carol and her crew of dedicated workers. : Space girls perform at the Russell Figure Skating Ambroise, Tracie McVey, Jackie Bogden, Linda Pa- Club's Spring Revue: (left ro right) Lisa King, Kim quette, Christine Laframboise, and Jody Chaters. The Club wishes to thank everybody who participated in the preparation of this Ice Show, par- ticularly Mrs. Sharon Milton, the Ice Show Coordinator. The outgoing executive of the Club feels that' though this year's skating programs may have seem- ed a little disorganized, the pro- grams required major changes, as well as our method of delivery. It is hoped that with these growing pains removed, our success rate in future years will continue to rise. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank all our volunteers, the skaters' parents and all those who supported us throughout this year in our myriad fund-raising activities: the Lob Ball Tournament, the two Test Nights, the Regal Catalogue sales, the Carnival participation, the St. Patrick's Day dance, the Ice Show and the Sure Hope It Tips Lottery is still going on and for which you can still buy tickets. Russell girls in 'B' final On Friday, March 12 and Satur- day March 13, 1982 the Russell Girl's Minor Hockey Team-hosted their First Annual Hockey Tour- nament. Teams were entered from Canterbury, Embrun, Nepean, Queensway Terrace, Kemptville, Ogdensburg and Russell. The tournament proved to be a great success with our own Russell girls advancing to the "B" finals. Nepean was victorious in that game beating Russell by 'the close score of 3-1. Kemptville was the victorious "A" Champs defeating Embrun 4-1 for the Trophy. Each of the "A" and -"B" finalist teams received trophies and an MVP was chosen for each game in the tournament. During the 10-game_ tourna- ment, four of the games went into Cynthia Shea (left) and Kim Anderson were pussycats in-the Russell Figure -- Club's Spring Revue. Overtime including one of Russell's, where they edged out Ogdensburg in a very close 3-2 decision. All in all the teams enjoyed visiting Russell and they are all looking forward to returning to next year's tournament. The Russell girls would like to extend special thanks to' Mrs. Judy Cooper, Shari-Lynne Empey Ian Darragh photos and Jem Empey for their tireless efforts to ensure the success of their first tournament. As well coach Don Empey comes in for his share of the girls' gratitude. Without him at the _ helm, the opportunity for the girls participation in a hockey program would have been impossible. Suc- cess cannot always be measured in the win and loss column. | l | <i 4] !
