December, 1981 The Castor Review ~ 7 "Do you figure it's worth that much?"' There's a lot of browsing to be done on a lazy November Saturday at the bazaars. But lest we forget, and let. our hair more than half-down, it's still church -- as Sue Lumsden realizes in photo at right. A church bazaar .- in the country by Dennis McGann November is church bazaar month. If you ignore all the cities on this continent you're left with millions of people who know -- instinctively -- that Saturdays in November mean church bazaars. There's comfort in that thought. And 'comfort' is probably the word which explains a country church bazaar best. That, and the word 'base- ment'. Never mind that these events are now held in what's known as 'church halls', it still feels like a church basement. You have to be on your almost-best behaviour -- a little bit of fooling around is okay but not too much because, after all, it's still church. : And church bazaars are still sponsored by 'the ladies of the church.' Oh yes, there are men involved, but the event still seems to say: 'homemaking skills of the highest order.' Skills learned while watching the children grow up, snatching an hour here and a few minutes there. Those feelings are there -- along with some of the finest baking this side of heaven. Z A well-served cup of tea, lovingly poured into fine china, and a heap- ing plate of tempting snacks (all cut into discreetly-tiny pieces) -- the good country life. Z All-that, along with tables of reasonably-priced items from the sewing machine and knitting basket, is a country church bazaar. A;comfortable way to spend a few hours on a November Saturday.
