Lorne Wade New RA Chairman Jack-Melaren At the recent Russell RA Annual Meeting local businessman Lorne Wade was elected to the office of RA Chairman for the year 1981. He had served on the RA during 1980 as a Director. Lorne brings to the RA vast experience in community affairs having served in the Russell Lions Club as President and as Zone Chairman. He has been active on local sports committees, numerous fund-raising events. He was the driving force behind the establishment of the Old Timers' Music Association and has always been around to lend a helping hand to worthwhile pro- jects. St. Albert got that one back 13 seconds later when Rejean Lavergne took a pass from Louis Desnoyers. Darryl Ross made it 4-2 at 11:37 with assists going to Pat Fleming and Allan Frappier. The Allouettes didn't say die, though. Denis Legault pulled St. Albert to within one before Wayne Warnock scored the eventual winner on-a slapshot that easily beat the surprised goalie. Mario Paquette scored with 10 seconds remaining but that didn't prevent Russell from winning its third straight game. Russell took six minor penalties while St. Albert received six minors and a ten minute misconduct. Wayne Warnock collected three points to lead Russell to victory. As of Dec. 10, Al Frappier leads team scoring with 18 points including nine goals. Warnock is second with 14 followed by Fleming with 13, Gaeten Forgues at 12. Besides numerous ruts in the ice, there were sections where lines were missing and spots where there was no whitewash. Whoever painted the lines where they had been erased did a pathetic job of redoing them neatly. The Russell Warriors were scheduled for an 8 p.m. hockey game yet didn't begin play until after 9 p.m. The referee and two linesmen were constantly on their hands and knees all evening filling in the ruts. It was a miracle no one from either team was injured. There are no excuses to be made. Warriors manager Bob Clarke said this was the third consecutive week they have had to endure uncalled, lengthy delays in the game. It ended at 11:20 p.m., 90 minutes later than usual. Let's not have to sit through another performance like that this season. I'm sure hopeful they get the message. ee The Russell Warriors are regaining some of the form they displayed a few years ago-when they were the powerhouse of the Cambridge-Russell Intermediate Hockey League. A number of player changes and acquisi- . tions have contributed to their recent success. The goaltending of Billy Flynn and Billy Jamison is one of the best duos in the league. Another recent addition to the ranks of the Warriors is Allan Frappier, formerly with the Winchester Hawks. Frappier is a hard-working player, and a fantastic goal-scorer.. Since Pete Nooyen. quit I was at the conclusion we were lacking an of- fence. Not since they acquired Frappier. He always give 100 per cent and is exciting to watch. Other new players up from juveniles are Tom Harrison and Paul Labelle. Both players are catching on quickly. 2 NHL FORECASTS Completing my forecasts on the fate of the final 14 positions, it's ut- terly hard to foresee where the teams will finish in the National Hockey League standings. The Los Angeles Kings are an exciting team and their line of Marcel Dionne, Charlie Simmer and Dave Taylor has to rank as one of the best lines in the NHL. The Kings should finish in eighth but won't be crown- ed as champs this year. With steady goaltending from Mike Luit and some offensive power, the St. Louis Blues will finish in ninth position. The Blues cut 70 goals off their goals-against record on their way to a second place finish in the once weak Smyth Division. : Surprisingly in the thick of things are the Vancouver Canucks. They are winning a lot of games at home and some consistency on the road should propel the Canucks into 10th place. The Flames have moved to Calgary from Atlanta. This is more of a hockey city and should provide the players with some incentive. The arena is sold out every game and a new 18,000 seat arena should be ready by 1983. Westerners should have something to cheer about. Another vastly-improved team is the Chicago Black Hawks and coach ' Keith Magnuson should provide fans with disciplined hockey. The Hawks may surprise some people. Having acquired Mike Palmateer from the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Washington Capitals should improve immensely. With some more of- fence, the Caps will make the playoffs for the first time in their young history. The New York Rangers have fallen on hard times. The team lacks consistency and numerous changes are needed to bring the Rangers back from oblivion. New coach Billy MacMillan and his Colorado Rockies will have his team playing disciplined hockey and don't be surprised if they resemble the Islanders where MacMillan was assistant coach. With more goals and a capable goaltender, the young Rockies should improve but won't peak for a few seasons. The Pittsburgh Penguins had only two 20-goal scorers last season and continue to lack scoring punch. Goaltending is a problem, especially since they traded Denis Herron to the Montreal Canadiens. The Pens will continue to nosedive and will finish in 16th place only because of five other inept teams. Lack of defence and little offence will keep the Hartford' Whalers near the bottom of the standings. If Blaine Stoughton has another 50 goal season and if the rest of the players contribute, they might become a contender. The Detroit Red Wings are terrible and should finish in 18th place because of rotten management and mediocre players. The Wings lack aggressiveness and defence but have good goaltending in Gilles Gilbert. Superstar Wayne Gretsky is the Edmonton Oilers and if he is shut down, the well runs dry. The Oilers aren't much of a threat to anybody but the Winnipeg Jets for last place overall in the NHL.
